    Extreme ground Aced!

G'day all. I've had a couple of cracks at detecting on the blue metal of the local show ground over the last couple of days. I went there yesterday with my X-Terra 30, which was armed with the standard coil as well as the DD large coil. With the standard coil on, it kept giving an overload...

My X-Terra 30 is on borrowed time.

I had a couple of friends drop over to visit today, and brought their new toy with them. They are interested in a mix of detecting and have just bought the 70. I took them through a few of the features of the 70, but they nearly didn't get it back. MAN; that is one sweeet machine. My poor old 30...

    An F2 pinpointing question.

I am wondering if those of you that use the F2 could tell me, if you notice any difference in the width of the pinpoint between a screw cap and a zinc penny? Thanks. Mick Evans.

Took the small coil out on the 30 for the first time today.

I've been trying to get out with it for most of the week, but been to busy.. As it was, I only managed to get out about three quarters of an hour before sun down today. It sure is sweet to use. Having a much tighter detection field, sure makes pinpointing a breeze. It's not so small that you...

Just read about a very rare gold coin find.

If you want to read about it, just pop over to the X-Terra forum. I believe that the find is above the matter of which detector was used to find it, is immaterial to the find. The coin is several hundred years old and never went into circulation. Only 6 are known to still exist. Mick Evans.

My compliments to Minelabs service department.

I just got off the phone to the service dept of Minelab here in Oz. I spoke with both Kevin and Nanard in regards to having my XS refitted with a new housing, as the old one is now past it's used by date. In particular, while I had them on the phone, I asked them about the hang ups that I have...

Do I have a faulty coil, or is there a flaw in the X-Terra's design?

I've been taking a club member out all through the last week, to show him how to hunt with a coin machine. We've been having a great time and uncovered the largest mens ring I've seen as well as having some good success in some very trashy ground. I think he is sold on the 30, as he can't...

    Coin metamorphosis

I've had my coin finds building up for the last 18 months and had an itch to buy the GTI 1500. So that's what dopey did.:( [attachment 84717 IMGP0347.JPG] [attachment 84718 IMGP0345.JPG] I bought the GTI earlier in the week and now have 3 hours of practice and 9 hours of hunt time on it...

Fired up The X-Terra 30 yesterday.

I managed to get out to my favourite spot yesterday with the 30 for a couple of hours. I had hit exactly the same spots at this location only 2 weeks back with the Explorer for a couple of hours, with a total of $13. Yesterdays results were fairly similar, with $12.53 recovered. although I...

    Elvis wasn't in the building!

On Friday, I had to take my eldest son to an appointment in Parks. ( Parks is located 120kms to the south of Dubbo and is the closest population to us of a town of 10 000+. It is an even 10 000. It is best known out of the area as the town on which the movie "The Dish" is based on a few years...

It looks like the metal detecting industry lost a bit of fire in it's belly.

On both the X-Terra and Explorer forums, an announcement has been made, that Minelab has been bought out by a communication company. While it may still operate as a metal detecting company, it won't have the same fire in the belly as Bruce Candy had, being an enthusiast himself. It looks like...

Tone question for upper end Garrett's

I was looking to trade my Explorer in a few weeks back on an upper end Garrett's, but it was refused. As a result, I decided to take it out a bit more to see for one last time, whether I could figure this machine out, and discovered that it's secret lies in listening primarily to it's tones, and...

    Toned up and went Exploring

I have found that I've been barking up the wrong tree as far as using the Explorer goes, which has lead to a disappointing outcome so far with it. After rereading a post of advice from Hard nosed Dave (thanks Dave) I dusted of the XS at the end of last week and spent a couple of afternoon's...

    Discrimination questions.

Does the Compadre give the same target responses as units like the Cibola? On the Tesoro's that have a pinpoint function, has anybody used it to gain further information out of a target via a pinpoint fade? Is the audio system on the Tesoros subtle enough, that you get a weaker signal on a...

Went and retrieved my X-Terra today.

After being without it for the last 6 weeks, I decided it was time to collect it back from my friend today. He had borrowed it to look for an old cache of coins that was buried somewhere under his fathers home. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to locate it. After retrieving it, I drove into the...

Which coil would be the better choice for Gold hunting?

I've got a couple that I know, who are selling their home to start travelling around the country. They are taking up detecting and will be hunting both coins and gold. I'm recommending the X-Terra 70 as the best choice, but not too sure on which coil would be best. Before the 6in coils, I would...

You should always have an ace up your sleeve.

And this is why! Finally got some photos of my hunt from the Christmas new year week. Totals were $252 in modern coins. 2 Hong Kong 10 cent pieces, 1 US penny, one working mobile phone (handed in), 4 cars, only 1 kept, 2 bits of jewellery, 4 keys, 1 kept for photo, lots of rubbish and a good...

Has anybody used an ultrasonic cleaner to clean their coins?

I can buy one of these in town, but haven't a clue as to where to get a coin tumbler from. I've never seen one advertised here in Oz. How effective are the ultrasonic cleaners, and would it be a safe method for a more valuable find? Mostly though, it will be for just regular coins. Mick Evans.

I was a bit surprised by the Ace.

I decided to hunt with my Explorer more this year, so that's what I started to do. After digging up a large number of screw caps (far more than I'm used to) I asked for help on the Explorer forum from other Aussie detectorists with it's dicrimination. It turns out, that I had the machine...
