I can’t believe I found the whole song!

I think I just surpassed my total from the last several years…

    My latest hunts

Yes, I’ve made it out twice so far this year, but the second time was a doozy. I just posted it, take a look!

I like that button! Great recovery!

I can’t believe I found the whole song!

Just before the last big snow, I was hunting a different part of a place I’ve been to a number of times. As it was getting dark back in December, I hit an iron patch and recovered an Indian head penny and an old wheat. So, when the snow finally melted off I was back. The ground was still...

    Flat button enigma?

Alpha shanks (yes, named for the shape of the Greek letter), were one of the first shank styles of flat buttons. Alpha shank style flat buttons were manufactured (but not necessarily lost) from about the 1770s to 1800. I have attached a screenshot of flat button shank styles from daacs.org...

    Flat button enigma?

A couple other people who looked at it think it is what is called “Silver Wash”. Apparently that was done either with true silver or nickel silver (which was cheaper and apparently more durable). Which this one might be, I do not know. However nickel silver might explain the slight brighter...

    Flat button enigma?

I have found tombacs before. They are always a strong gray color, come out of the ground looking pretty clean, and as you say they do resist corrosion well. However this one is definitely green on the back and also has green showing around the edges on the front where the plating is wearing...

    Flat button enigma?

I had to go wading through the snow, but I wanted to get out once in January. I went back to a spot with an old house and garbage dump. I found a buckle and what appears to be a drawer pull for an old curved front dresser. But, I am scratching my head over what appears to be an alpha shank...

Old trash pit in my lawn?

If only all our backyards were so nice! Am I seeing an indentation in the top of your unknown item which may be indicative of a hole filled with dirt? If so, I’m wondering about the shape of the hole and the depth.

    Fantastic end to 2024

Gives us all hope there are more good sites left out there. Great finds, and hope to see more!

    Help id please thanks

It is generally easier to help identify a fresh surface rather than a rock which is coated with dust or lichen. Any chance you could chip off a side and show a fresh surface?

Last hunt before the white death

You’re welcome! I hope it thaws out for you and gives you an opportune break in the weather. My club has several categories of find of the month. At the current rate, I’m thinking the only people who are going to be able to enter a find for January will be the ones who can travel…

Last hunt before the white death

No problem! Some of them might not be worth cleaning. But, it seems that unless you actually see the metal flaking off, a lot of the “roughness“ may actually be slightly cemented dirt, which these tools can usually remove. It is sort of the notion of the old fossil dig toys you might remember...

Last hunt before the white death

Thanks! I am wondering if the Bell System tag might be from a pole. I know poles used to be numbered. But all the ones I have seen were rectangular and nailed on both ends.

Last hunt before the white death

Thanks! They don’t always come out that nice. For some reason the rims of IHCs tend to be delicate and can start flaking off. But I am pleased at how well this one came out.

Last hunt before the white death

I purchased a set of Andres crayons on-line. Crayon is sort of a misnomer. There are two “pencils” with different hardnesses of what I think might be pencil lead. There is another for coarser work with a fiberglass core. The last one has a fine grade steel wool brush which can be pulled out...

Last hunt before the white death

Got out for a day before the white death arrived. We have over a foot of snow on the ground now and it doesn’t look like it’s going to thaw off before the end of January. More snow forecast for tonight. 😕 So, I used my set of Andres crayons to clean up the IHC I found. Before and after...

Time to get the lead out

When our club found numerous bullets in our first outing, we wondered about the patina, the abundance, and the variety as well. One member took several samples to a major metal detecting gathering, and the general consensus was (aside from some obvious newer bullet designs) that these bullets...

I hunted in Culpepper last weekend
