    If the orangish stuff flakes off in little flat shiny flakes then I would say muscovite or phlogopite. These are sheet silicates like biotite. The rock itself would probably be a low metamorphic grade gneiss.

    If it flakes off in a little shiny flakes when you scrape it, it is not gold. It would be muscovite or, more likely, phlogopite. These are both phyllosilicates (sheet silicates in the same family as biotite).

    What version are you guys running?

    I am on 2.0 and have been since it came out. I think my detector had .71 when I got it, but I updated shortly thereafter. I understand 2.0 is better for small gold with the goldfield program, and stability may also have improved among other things.

    I will have to try that in the crevices. I also wonder about a clipped down Q-tip with polish compound in a dremel, as I don’t currently have any dremel pads small enough to get inside rings or in crevices.

    I tried that first, and it did not cut through the black. I don’t have an electrolysis kit, so I tried a dremel with a buffing pad and some Mother’s Mag Polish. That mostly worked (see pics in earlier response). However, even that would not cut through the crust on the face of one of the dimes.

    Finally some softer ground here in Ohio.

    A nice clean liberty on the headband and only one nick on the rim. A lot of mine tend to flake off the rim when I try to clean them. And that’s after letting them dry for a couple of days.
