    Wagon wheel spindle?

The mill was in operation from 1869 to 1888. Steam powered maybe, but they would have had to haul water in from 2 miles away. This really is a virgin site with many more good finds coming, plus they had another mill running 1 mile south at the same time, that one is going to be a challenge to...

    Wagon wheel spindle?

Half the fun was just locating this old mill, used an old hand drawn map along with a modern Topo map and that mill site was exactly where the old map said it was. If this item were a saw spindle, being in a dry canyon I wonder how they would of powered it?

    Wagon wheel spindle?

Thanks Jim, after researching wagon spindles, I’ve pretty much came to the same conclusion. This find really has me puzzled, the sawmill in question is located in a dry area in northern Utah, so I assume the timber was processed by hand so that rules out any steam engine parts. The large end is...

    Wagon wheel spindle?

Found at a 1800’s sawmill today, any ideas? My first guess is a wagon wheel spindle. The small end is threaded, the do hickey looking thing on the outside looks like a grease hole with a hinged cover

Found this at a 1880’s sawmill

Thanks for your interest ronaldj2, It was found in one piece, completely buried on a steep mountain slope near the base of a cliff. My best guess would be it’s made of brass.

    Second Indian with the 800

Nice, I’m still looking for my first Indian. My nox 800 yesterday found me a 1935 mercury and a 1944 wheat along with 7.84 in change. Today 12 quarters, 15 dimes, 4 nickels and 4 copper cents. I’ve recently stopped digging zinc cents. Loving this machine!!!

    Nox 800 is great.

Your 800 is just finding what’s there, when you swing the coil over gold jewelry, the detector will find it along with all the junk out there, luck of the swing my friend

    Anyone been/felt threatened while detecting?

Was out detecting in the mountains of northern Utah and come across this trail hidden in the brush, looked like someone deliberately pulled branches over it. I immediately thought illegal pot farm and got this creepy feeling that I was being watched. I was armed to the teeth but chose to get...
