08/12 yard hunting (double, double and another double)

This is pretty close to the best day of hunting I've had in a long while in terms of quantity and quality. We headed back to the same town as my last post (07/14 yard hunting) and refocused on the same area. We hunted a total of five properties today with permission. Two of them were a complete bust. The third turned up a sterling ring very shallow. The forth home produced the 28 standing lib quarter in the back yard, (4 doors down from the house that produced well last time). We were nearing the end of the day with little time left today when we got permission at our last house, (2 doors down from last hunt's best yard). It was similar in size, age and yard layout to the other great property. That is when the all out free-for-all began. This place was turn of the century and as virgin as you will find a yard. This yard ended up producing 6 silver between us, 2 buffs, 2 injuns and a second ring. I did ding one of the barbers but that was due to bad karma. Greg called me over to check out the barber dime he just dug. I walked all the way across the yard to check it out. His eyes aren't the best when it comes to looking at dirty coins so I took a look. "Sorry man, not a barber. It's a merc. Good find anyway!" I then literally took one step back towards the area I was hunting when I got that sweet deep silver sound, (three feet from his merc plug.) I dug about 7 or 8 inches for a barber dime. He was not a happy camper. "You found that in MY SPOT!" I was afraid to turn my back to him as I know how good he is with a Lesche. He had a good laugh that I dinged it and blamed it on bad karma. Anyhow, here are the pics from the hunt. The group shot on the bumper is all of our keepers combined and my finds below cleaned up. I don't know the dates on his finds as he hasn't sent me the pics yet. I will update this post when he sends them. I couldn't crack the 1800's today but we had a BLAST in the early 20th century. Thanks, and I hope you can all get out to dig soon. JJ

Nice finds for sure JJ.
That is a nice haul of Silver for you both.
Love the 05 Indian with a Full Liberty.
Your comment The good feeling of finding is almost as bad as the guilt of him missing it. Been there. :|

Thanks guys for the replies. I just received an email from Greg with his finds from today. Thanks again, JJ

Looks like one heck of a day you had there! Congrats on a super set of finds!! Not often someone pulls a pair of SLQs not to mention the rest!

Best, Erik

Thanks for all the replies. Erik, It's not often that I find standing libs. My second and third ever surfaced in this hunt only two yards apart. Occasionally we get cocky by getting the others attention and "point to the fences". Greg came over to check it with his DFX and said "Have fun digging that deep clad quarter". I told him maybe but I just can't hear the copper. The audio was consistently sweet from all directions. I dug the plug and called him back over to see the tiny section of silver rim peeking out of the sidewall. He finished digging it out. The second one came from a curbstrip two doors down. For some reason, Greg started hunting on the same side of the center dividing sidewalk that I was on. I found that odd so I didn't hunt the strip about five feet from the curb by forty feet in lenght, saving it for him. He quickly moved on and forgot about that strip. At the end of the day he gave me the "ready to go" sign and loaded up his gear. I asked if he wanted to finish the strip by the street but he was ready to go. I decided to make a quick pass by the curb and a return trip back up the middle. A Few steps from the car, the second SLQ screamed, even at the brisk pace I was walking at to leave. It was an unreal day and I even offered to buy him lunch for accidently jacking a barber from his spot. Thanks again for all the replies, JJ

Great story JJ....you were hot that day! I've only gotten 3 career SQLs so far.....have actually found more Large Cents than these quarters. Again, very nice job!!
