At the Jr. High School in town, in the back of the school, which I have been told was the area where the "old" high school used to be. It is basically now a parking lot and storage area, with some fill dirt brought in. There is at least one area where there is no fill dirt, but is is not very big. I found several copper pennies in this area just a few inches deep. My deepest targets today were at 7and 1/2 to 8 inches, measured with my digger, but unfortunately, they were only a 1976 and a 1980 penny. So I am thinking a lot of fill dirt in that particular area. I was hoping for some silver, but it was not to be. I did get a very worn 1934 wheat penny ( at least that is what it "appears" to be... it is very worn) which will be my new "oldest" coin with a date. This is the same area that I found the 1941 silver merc. Next oldest was a 1968 penny. I also hunted specifically for deeper high tones with the 11 inch DD coil for the first hour and a half, then the 5 inch DD for whatever. With the 11", I found 5 quarters, 1 dime, 4 copper pennies. (The wheat penny is at the bottom of the picture and the back of the wheat penny is in the close up picture, you can see the "o" in the "one" pretty good.. I had a surface find modern clad penny also). With the 5" I found 3 quarters, 1 dime,7 copper and 5 zinc pennies. First time hunting in the snow. We had about 6 inches of snow 2 days ago and it was a different experience to say the least. I noticed something peculiar today, some of the modern pennies would give off a high tone... I could isolate a particular area and sweep a high tone both ways, not strong, but enough to get your attention. This was in a sandy, water saturated soil. Coins were 2 inches deep or less. Monte, if you read this, do you have any insight to into this phenomenon? Is it because I was maxed out on sensitivity in wet conditions and kind of "overloaded" the receiver circuit? Anybody can chime in if they have the answer...it will help me in my quest for knowledge about our hobby.
This is the first time I have stopped a hunt before dark...my toes were frozen. I will wear insulated socks tomorrow. It won't happen again. I only have 2 days left before I have to catch my boat for a mandatory 28 day hitch. Gonna try to find some silver or gold tomorrow. Gamma 6000...GB 62, Sens @ 99, Disc @ 20.
Good luck everybody and HH to all.
