1/40th of a gram!!!

I try to get on this thing when I can but often I don't get the chance to for days.
Yep, it was 1/40th of a gram and I have found a few that size since.
Small gold I know but sometimes fun to find even though it wouldn't even buy me a beer.
The settings were 30 on the sens, auto tracking enabled from start to finish, tone 10, volume 20 and a super slow sweep speed.
It nearly drove me mad trying to find it and I nearly walked away from it twice. It was a small sound but defined, a little "zip".
The ground was super quiet with just a slight murmur here and there from some light mineralisation.
Some say why bother with stuff like that but for me the monetary value of the gold I find comes last. Ive had a good day as far as I am concerned if I find anything at all.
Oh yeah, someone asked about the camera and magnification.
It was shot on a Nikon F80 using a standard 28 to 80 Nikon lens with an adaptor for a 4 x and a 2 x close up lens.

BT, its been a while since we last met, was wondering what headphones if any you are using with your Xterra70? I am in the process of producing a video on the GPX4000 and have just finished a scene comparing the Xterra70 to the GPX4000 (nothing too intense just showing the difference between the 2 technologies). I had a ball just before Xmas this year using the 50 in the parks and on the beach at a place called 1770 (south of your old location in QLD) once I am finished with the vid intend on getting out and about with the 70 on some gold areas I know here in Clermont.

I bet you don`t pay for the 70, how about getting your mates at minelab to give us the same deal they get in the US eg. a free dd coil.but of course we are second class very angry!!!!!

Your absolutely right KRIS, I got the Xterra 70 (second hand BTW) on loan (I had to beg borrow and steal too) however I bought my 50 off George Mayer in Cairns for full RRP along with my Sovereign GT and Eureka Gold as well as many other detectors too numerous to count.

I also had to wait for the 18Khz gold coil as there seemed to be a shortage in supply. I seem to have inadvertently walked into a problem here and to be honest am disappointed because I was under the impression it was only the prospecting scene that garnered all the ill feelings when it comes to the subject of and its leading role in the metal detecting industry. What a shame it's elsewhere!!!

Hi Kris, I take it your not in the U.S.? I have noticed the higher cost of the Minelab detectors over seas. I hate to see this. I don't know how anyone can afford to detect over there!

Hi John.

I see your selling the X-T -70 for $679.97 US, thats about $820.00 Australian.

Its interesting to note that the price in Australia is at least $1120 AU.
So someone is getting an extra $300 AU, now the question is Who ?

Maybe you could ship to OZ , the total cost has gotta be better !

Hi Bobby.
Yes it would be cheaper. We could save around $200AU if we imported from the States. The only catch is, that if something goes wrong with it, guess where we've got to send it? That's right; back to the USA! Bizarre, ain't it. Under our laws, if you import something, then you are seen as the "manufacturer" and therefore, responsible for any defects!

Hi Bobby, well actually I am not allowed by Minelab to export so that is out for sure. I feel for you guys and looks to me since Minelab is in Australia you would actually get a better price than us here in the states. But that's the way it goes.

G,day John.
Mate I use simple RPGs with volume control. Tough lead and I can hear the 70s electronics humming away in the background, super faint tonal changes, all I need to.
Went out yesterday and gotr two small bits of gold for .7 of a g.
Just enough for a beer or two huh!
One chinese coin, an 1826 halfpenny, an old broach(not in good nick) a fantastic quartz crystal cluster which fills my hand and the worst happened for any relic hunter.
I was using the little elipt 10" and left the concentric at home, which is better for relics and gaugung target size in my opinion, I got a signal reading 30 and it seemed to be smallish is size, tea cup saucer size, it wasnt and I slammed the pick straight through an old 1800s gunpowder flask. Ruined for ever. Still was a blast of a day though.
No guessing where I go this week with the concentric.
Now all of you kiss and make up.

Thanks BT, I have a pair of those stashed around the place somewhere (bought 'em of Barry Johnson years ago). I too have noticed the electronic hum in the background of the 70, you obviously don't mind this?

For the information of the above, the prices quoted by John Tomlinson is his discounted price without tax, whereas the prices quoted in Australia are the full RRP with GST, as we all know most dealers will be only too happy to work on the price a bit. I was not aware you could obtain the higher frequency coil in the US as part of the detector purchase.

I get this all the time, I have my eye on a new Hi Def camera, that camera sells for a bit over 8 grand here in OZ (discounted), yet the same camera is about AU$1400 cheaper in the US, I have mates in the states who could easily pick one up for me, but I am leary of the idea due to the hassle it would cause if I ever had a problem and need warranty work done.

The best I can suggest to those people who are disgruntled by any perceived price differences is to contact Minelab Australia direct and ask for some clarification on the matter 1800 637 786.

I like the RPGs though they can get a bit crushy on the ears. Just pad them out and they are a good set.
Too much emphasis is placed on over priced headphone which when they get damaged you have to save up for another pair as opposed to buying another pair with your small change.
I dont mind the hum? Mate I work off of it. Know what to listen to and you hear mega.

Hi JP, it must be a frustration for you to have to pay much higher prices for things that you want and need. The Xterra 70 price was lowered just recently and yes they have a special running. You can purchase the X70 and get the 18Khz elliptical coil free. I love the X70 and it is a joy to use. Yes I am a dealer but not a paying dealer here on Find's forum. So I just want to post from time to time and I am not trying to sell here on Guv's property. I really need to become a sponsor on this forum. I hope I will be able to come and meet you someday JP and get some lessons on one of those 4000's. Are you guys saying that you can hear the uprocessor working in the background? This can happen sometimes with uprocessor based circuitry. I think it is so cool the way electronics developed from VT's, to transistors to uprocessors. I remember working with VT's and boy that HV could be a bit of an eye opener!!! Ok God Bless all and JP I like your little story you put on the AZO forum.
