1050 or slimline coil on exII?

hi,
i have just bought an exII with two coils, the 1050 and the slimline coil. want to sell one of them. which one is the better one to keep?

regards alex

Hi Alex,
The 1050 came standard with the Ex II. I would keep the 1050. I think the 1050 is lighter and they both go about the same depth. Folks did not like the Slimline coil. Many Ex II's are being sold with the slimline because folks are putting the 1050 on their SE's. The Slimline would work better in water since the 1050 tends to float.

Make sure they are both working right. Test them out in your yard. Lay a quarter down in a clean area if you can find one. Sweep both coils over the quarter and start raising the coil. If it is on clean ground you should be able to raise the coils up about a foot and still get a tiny peep of a signal. Try swinging crazy fast. Try this also - Drive a small stake into the ground away from the quarter and other targets. Bump the coil and see if you get a signal on the bump. You should not. Some coils will give a signal even though they are ok. I think the Slimline was more apt to do this. This is just to see if you can stand using the coil in a woods where it gets bumped a lot or if there is a loose wire in there somewhere. The final test would be to put them both under water for a while then test them again.

I have never had a coil go bad. I have read posts on this forum that describe everything from not working at all, to the most common - erratic signals. I imagine the erratic signals is like running 32 sensitivity under high power lines. Hope this helps.

1050 and slim is the same gut coils but diferent construction inside 1050 you have even more slim coil on the three or for rubber suspensions, but mainlab decided to make cheap and look lighter- --that is how slim coil was born. start to use both and after short time you will see what is better for you. some coils are more sensitive for hot rocks. this is not very helpfull. I have three 1050 coils and one is very sensitive to hot rocks so much that I cant use it, my slim is works ok but its sensitive to bums---makes fals signals.. good luck Stasys

I think the 1050 has been a proven coil. The slimline.... well it may have had some problems when first distributed. You would likely get more money for the 1050. They are good back up coils. With the new 12 inch coils people arent grabbing them up like they were. But on resale with your detector..... most would prefer the 1050.

Yep.. the pro is 11, but there are some 12 inch ones like the SEF and Sun Ray... i should have said just new coils.

Id sell both & get a Pro coil .. If you have to keep one keep the 1050... I have a Explorer II and a Etrac & have a Pro coil for each of them.. I could live without the 10X12 SEF... If I was to have 1 coil it would be the Pro coil..If I could have 2 it would be a Pro coil and a 6X8 SEF..... If I could have 3, Pro coil, 6x8, X-5.......... This is for old park/school yard type hunting with some to lots of trash.. The Pro coil will find stuff that the 1050 will miss.. The Explorer XS & Explorer II are a little week in pin point mode .. I found that the 1050, the 4.5X7 and the Joey coils aggravates this condition.... The 6" EXcelerator is deeper than the X-5 but doesn't separate quite as well Thats all I have to say about that....wildherre
