11" Minelab factory coil ???

St Bernard

The 11" DD factory coil that comes with the Safari is it an excellent coil or are there other coils that that will work better especially in open areas with little trash? Thanks

The 11" is my favorite. I've tried a 13" Ultimate which was ok but too heavy for my taste and I used a 15" WOT for all of 20 mins and couldn't wait to get back to my truck to get that heavy brick off my machine. I hate wearing any type of harness so I'll just stick with 11" or smaller on Safari/ Etrac style machines. One coil I never tried was the 10x12 SEF but it is actually heavier than the 13" Ultimate.

That is what I am looking to find out if there are coils in the 10" to 15" class that out perform the stock 11" coil? Thanks

I was looking at getting a different coil for my Safari but was looking at replacement cost of my 5 year pro coil and was surprised in manufactors remarks that it was new and improved pro coil better than original more stable. My original pro coil was a rusted nail finding machine I rarely use it because of that fact went to Detech coils took care of rusted nail problems maybe the new pro coils are better but anything much bigger than 12 inch is a waste of time coin hunting.

Bill, I'm not saying the larger coils won't give you more raw depth in large open areas that are relatively clean because they will. But as Prep1957 said above for general coin hunting in smaller places like yards with moderate trash/iron I don't think it's worth the aggravation of the extra weight and target masking you get with the larger coils. On a large field or wide open beach you will definitely get more coverage and depth with the large coils.

I think the 11"DD will work fine for me. I do not ever intend to go to the beach. I will get the SEF 8X6 tho. That looks like all I will need. I can always get another larger coil if needed later.. Thanks for the responces

For some reason I think Pro Coil finds coins on edge better I hunted a baseball field with 8X6 then followed up with pro coil just to see if I could get a little deeper sensitivity set manually as hot as I could get it.What surprised me is I found about 11 clad dimes at 5 to 8 inches on edge and 3 silver all on edge that 8X6 missed not really that deep.I have been following up with Pro Coil at other areas too almost every coin that I left was on edge even when I used 12X10 SEF must be some sort of quirk on how they wound coil.I never even hardly used Pro Coil for 3 years because it still likes iron but using it more as clean up coil after I hunt with 8X6.I seem to find more gold rings with 8x6.

I hate changing coils, so last year I found a good deal on a lightly used Safari, and snapped it up. Now I have two Safari detectors, one with a SEF 8 x 6 inch coil, and one with the 13" Detech Ultimate coil. No more changing coils! If I'm heading for a very trashy or thick, brushy site, I will take the Safari with the 8 x 6 SEF coil on it. If it's a wide open site or a farm meadow, I will take the Safari with the Ultimate coil. In many cases, I will have both units with me ready to go depending on the conditions of the site.

One other point--I am not entirely certain of this, but I believe the 13" Ultimate coil is lighter than the 11" stock Minelab coil--Am I correct on this?

I was wondering where the name PRO came from. I did find the 11" DD coil on Kellyco's web site listed as a Minelab 11" DD Pro coil. Looking at Minelabs web site they do not list a 11" DD PRO coil. I contacted Minelab in Ill. and contacted Business Development Director for No. America about that coil being listed as a PRO coil. I received today an answer from Debbie Smikoski who is the head of the department I mentioned and she said this is incorrect for them to list it that way and it will be taken care of because they make no such coil. They only have one 11" coil for the Minelab detectors that come with that coil. Just a while back I read where a person was going to order that coil because of the way they advertised it. She appreciated it very much that it was brought to there attention

Thanks

Good catch, StB. Thanks for posting.
