11"x7" DD Coil Cover Niggle

I was detecting on a farmers field last year and the ground was just right as in flat no stubble, but very dry n dusty as it had not rained for a while, Anyway i noticed I was getting a lot of false signalling more than I'd experienced before, So much so I was checking under the coil to make sure a piece of silver paper or something hadn't wedged itself to the coil somewhere. At this point of picking the detector up by the coil i noticed fine dust like sand had accumulated inside the coil cover, so i shook the detector to get as much of the dust out, but some still remained...At this point i realised the coil cover has to come off to give the coil and inside of cover a good clean....Anyway i don't know if they glue theses covers on at Fisher but it took some prising off. Now i find it dosen't fit snugly as it did and I have to use plastic insulating tape to keep it on........I think Ill refit & seal the coil cover with some aquatic silicon. .......So just a tip, if you get a lot of false signals check the coil cover to see if its holding dust fine soil/sand or even worse silver paper............

I'd hunt without the coil cover. Too much stuff gets in there, adds weight and iff you seal it, it adds more. I know, I know, but multiply a thousand or so swings times the xtra weight.
Never heard of anyone wearing out the bottom of a coil.

I'm hunting without covers now and have been for nearly 2 years ... ever since my CZ6A went nearly blind to nickles due to sand in the coil cover. I hate to think about what I could have missed. Just one of the right targets lost due to conductive dirt in a coil cover could easily pay for a new coil. I looked at the little scratches on the coil covers I have, and how little wear there was, and figured that it would take so long to wear through a coil that the cover hardly made sense. Could always coat coil with marine epoxy if you want to protect it.

Great Idea the resin coated protection, I guess the idea of the coil cover was more of a cosmetic protection for when you might sell/upgrade. As you might get a better deal if the machine is virtually scratch free.

Hey that is a worrying thought, the sand/dust inside the c-cover blanking some targets......yikes!

Or the cynical view the coil cover. LOL, another expensive must have accessory that the treasure hunter should not be without.....Perhaps thats a bit unfair? as on the beach I hear they make for decent Frizbees lol especially the round ones.

No more than I get to hunt I think it would take me 300 plus years to wear through the bottom of the coil, so for now I am taking mine off. May keep it handy for a time when I get into some gravel.
