12-6-70, found me deep in the hardwood flats and hills of southern arkansas, doing something that was very dear to me. now, even though I was making a deer drive with 10 of the finest saddleback walker deer dogs that ever was born for 15 hunters scattered along the roads waiting to hear the music from the hounds and along with the fact that it was the first time I had ever gotten a vacation from the aluminum smelter during a deer season, the child came back into play even though I was 25 at the time.
as the hounds jumped a nice buck and started up the hill towards the road, I knew it was over a mile each way out and it being afternoon chose to carve my initials and date on this beech tree, just like uncle Eli the trapper did years ago.
thru the reforestation process of international paper company in the next coming years, clearing all the trees, except for some down each running stream--they soon grew up once again into nothing but pine tree thickets. for years and years, I could not find this tree for it was so thick with underbrush a wabbit would not even enter there.
as the cycle of trees aged it came time to thin them and last year during deer season I found this tree where I had one day in my younger years stood there being a kid and decided to snap a digital of it.
the contest for a silver coin was for the closest without going over......JB in mississippi is the winner.but, i did see where d2 was close but his guess was over
