13" Ultimate coil for the Tejon, at long last :-)

Got the coil yesterday afternoon but had to wait till today to try it out, this was a very quick test as I only had an hour or so as the missus was needing the car to go shopping ,':(

Just up the road is a wooded area I knew about, very little snow and reasonably soft it was also quiet target wise, not much rubbish.

I buried 3 coins, all flat in the holes.

1. Was an Edward 1st hammered at 9" Silver, very thin coin. Both gold and silver are very small.

2. A young Victoria half sov at 8" 22 carat gold

3. An old penny at 13" Copper

I manually ground balanced, threshold about the 3 o clock position and sens at 6. No problems the machine was quiet and stable. It picked up the 3 coins as I thought it should in all metal. However, when I flicked into disc mode the signals were still there but not awfully good, they weren't iffy but bordering on it. Hmmm :-/ I will GB using a higher sens in all metal the next time and see if this will help when I flick into secondary disc mode to check the signal.

So i ground balanced using the disc mode method (Monte's Power Balancing) Sens 9 and I was pleasantly surprised to hear the targets all sing out loud and clear. Main disc was just above iron and secondary disc just a tad below foil.

So I need to work on my all metal ground balancing so that I get a better response from the secondary disc mode when checking a signal...(Monte?). A lot of work needed yet but delighted with results so far.

Got a dig on Sun so this will be a good test for the coil but from what I've seen so far she will do fine.

Hi Gunnar, don't know if you remember a while back I was on the Blisstool site aka DavyR a few months back (had the V3 +15" coil) and sold it. Well after yesterdays tests I can tell you that the Tejon + ultimate 13" coil is nearly a match for the Blisstool 15" coil in depth capabilities on single coins but where the Tejon really scores is it's disc is second to none, even at depth. Overall it is so much easier to set up and use.

Not going to say much more except to say that I retested yesterday on pasture land and increased the depths. These depths were achieved using disc mode. Silver hammered 11", Gold sov 9.5" and instead of a copper penny used an 1902 George VII shilling which is nearly pure silver at 12". All of the coins were picked up easily at a normal detecting swing (no mistaking you had a hit) I used a reasonably brisk swing speed and walked at a normal pace for the test.

Please remember this is only a test for depth, not a real time test of the coil abilities in actual use. But from what I have seen so far she gives me a lot of confidence in her.

I hadn't had any experience with these sef coils and as they are so expensive but after yesterdays tests I can be sure that the 8"x 6" sef coil will be my next purchase for those more iron infested sites.

So for any of you who are wondering if the 13" Ultimate is as good as they say for deep single coins, providing your machine can be manually ground balanced then you shouldn't be disappointed. However, there (may) be problems with it if your ground is excessively mineralised but I won't know for sure till I try it on some. I know where there is ground like that but will have to travel a fair distance to get to it. This will be in the springtime.

A quick update, I ended up on very heavily mineralzed soil at a club dig on Sun past. And found that the Ultimate coil does not handle those conditions well. I could hardly pick up my 1902 silver shilling at 7" I would say I lost about 50% depth using my findings on the soil further down country which tests the same as Ferrite as regards to minerlalization. Most of my detecting takes place on more benign soil conditions so, so far I'm delighted with the coils performance.

Tried power balancing and all metal, had to run with very low sens, she settled down ok in both modes eventually but a considerable loss in depth was the result.

A T2 user said he had 3 bars on his mineralization meter which according to him is very heavily mineralized. So if your soil conditions are heavily mineralized, maybe consider some other coil.

Hi,can this coil be purchased in the US? I looked on the kellyco site and could not find it.This is strange, because they have this coil for other brands. My stock tejon got missing and would like to try one.Thanks.;-)

They must be able to order one in for you, have you asked them about it yet?

Any thought's on trying Tesoro's 12"x 10"? an excellent coil by all accounts. A chap I'm in contact with on one of the U.K. forums has one on his Tejon, he swears by it. If he didn't stay at the other end of the country we would do a side by side comparison. But from what he says there won't be much to choose between them and it (may) be that the Tesoro coil will handle mineralization better than the Ultimate. This is something I'm looking into at the moment.

Failing that you can buy direct from Detech in Bulgaria. Many folks here in the U.K. have dealt direct with Bulgaria. I have yet to hear of one complaint, all of them have a very high regard for the level of service Detech provide from Bulgaria. Very easy to get feedback on this.

If your soil is low to medium'ish in mineralization you will love this coil but not if you search in area's of high mineralization.
