1700's British copper..........

and I'm doin' the Hap, Hap, Happy dance:hot:

The date is gone as is most of the raised lettering except for G V I S The bust outline matched one that a friend of mine had found and the reverse matched as well. I don't want to risk cleaning it but what can I do to preserve what's left. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve in PA

Man, what a find! I assume it's George the First or right after the name it would have his number. That is old! Your instinct not to clean it is spot on. DON'T! It's a lovely piece of history just as it is. Where did you find it? How deep? What was touching it that made that pattern?

Put it in a good quality mylar 2x2 or flip. Not in PVC which releases gasses that corrode coins. Personally, I'd go to the coin shop and spend a couple of dollars on a nice capsule type holder for it.

Well done, Steve!

Chris

I think it's a george II but It's really hard to tell. the obverse and reverse both match a known 1739 George II. I found it in the Boro park that has been gone over a zillion times. I know there are still old coins there to be found but I really got lucky with this one. I could have just as easily walked three feet to the left or right and missed it. It's a pretty big park.

It was about six inches down and the meter bounced between penny and half, oddly enough it's a half penny. There was alot of slate in the ground there and I think, maybe, that's what caused the stipes. I like rolling my silver coins around in my hands but this one I would like to protect so I'm going to put it in a holder.

I was really hoping to break the 1800's this season but I never thought I would pass that.

I've read that soaking in olive oil will remoisturize old copper coins but will it help hault the corrosion?

Olive oil won't hurt it but be careful when wiping it off afterward. It probably won't do much to your coin. It is better for removing caked on gunk. It also takes months of soaking. Keeping it in mylar will halt corrosion as long as its clean and dry when you put it in. Make sure its mylar. Most are. The slate theory makes sense.

You're right. The II on George the 2nd penny is around the rim quite a bit. You can figure it out by which way the monarch is facing. George I faces right. George II faces left.

Once again, I am extremely happy for you. That is a terrific find!

Chris

My only pre 1800 coin is Chinese. I would love to find something colonial or early US.

I put a little oil on the coin to neutralize the colors. This pic shows the bust a little better and clearly shows the II mark behind his head.

Did any of the date appear?

Chris

WTG B2H awesome find!!! :detecting::thumbup:

Man the first 2 posts I read are of these fantastic finds!

You guys are killing me...actually I think I can speak for all of us...I am speechless!

What a nice find.

Congrats!

Don

HI born2hunt,
Did you find another coin with this one? The circular mark on the head suggest that another coin was resting on this one?
Adrian SS

Adrian,

If you're refering to the circular mark all the way around the rim, I'd guess that's where the reeded edge corroded away. I did recheck the hole and go no further signal.

Great coin. I soak the uncleaned ancient coins I find on digs for about 3 months in olive oil to take of grit and corrosion. You have to change it occasionally or it can go rancid.

I was refering to the cemi circle mark below Geogivs. Looks like another coin was resting there and caused that dark stain.

Adrian,

That pic is part of my coin inposed over top of a much better example to show the remaing G I V S letters. I should have marked it as such.

Sorry for the confusion.
