18” Deep Seeker Coil....

( 18” Deep Seeking Coil)

Welcome to a quick insight into this our new deep seeking coil produced from us here at deeptech metal detectors.

So with this new 18” coil comes new possibilities for searching old and new permissions more thoroughly than ever before.

You have three main areas of detecting that come into play with adding this huge coil to your current setup, you have depth also target separation and last but not least ground coverage.

This coil was primarily designed to search for deep larger items but still can do a great job as a general search coil, you just need to take a few things in to account as I will mention further on....

Depth...

So we will start with depth, now you may think big coil big depth ?, that’s 100% nailed on that you will definitely find deeper large items with this coil, makes for an ideal hoard hunter if you feel big items are deep and out of reach of your 11” Pitbull Coil in the land you have searched previously.

But let’s put depth in this sense aside for now, be great if there is a hoard laying in the field with your name on it truly but let’s talk about the smaller items, the small coins and little artefacts that are on the limit of depth with your standard 11” Pitbull coil.
These tiny signals can be vaguely noticeable or such targets you may not take a chance on sometimes, it’s the little iffy signals like these that the 18” coil produces solid audio on and brings to life depending on ground conditions.

When we are talking about good sized to large coins then this coil has no issue finding these beyond the 10” mark with great audio as I’ve found out personally since using the coil.

I had a fair few deep coins whilst testing these coils so I can’t see why you will not be finding coins around the 15” mark without a doubt when conditions are right, just don’t give up on those deep signals as it’s more than capable to find large coins at great depth.

Separation...

The deeptech models have always had a great reputation for their separation abilities, so you may think that with this huge 18” coil attached to a Vista machine may struggle from separating the good from the bad, but you will be surprised at what this large coil is capable of, many items I found next to iron whilst testing and you can clearly separate the audio in some situations, I even found good items in with nails in the same hole so this very important attribute is still there, but don’t forget this coil is at its best on clean trash free ground, when in busy iron areas then use a smaller coil for your Vista Series machine.

Coverage...

Another very important aspect bar depth is coverage, the more ground any coil sees the better your chances for finding items in the soil with each sweep.
Being this is a huge 18” coil its foot print is just that... Huge!
So a big coil means big coverage what is ideal for covering large areas of land efficiently, this assures your getting as many signals as possible in your days worth of detecting.

Having the option...

One of the most important choices to be made when detecting is coil size, matching a coil to the field conditions is very important to maximise your chances of success.
For example...don’t take a small coil into a field that’s empty of targets, also you don’t take a large coil coil to a field where the trash/iron levels are in abundance with each sweep of the coil.

So matching the coil to a field is very important, this is why I’ve always believed in the 3 to 1 saying.

This is having 3 different coils to each 1 machine you own, this way you have all fields scenarios covered, for this one reason it’s worth having this huge 18” coil available so you can to pop back to the car if need to change setup once you’ve worked out the fields trash contents.

(Setting up the 18” coil for the field)

There are two main aspects that affect a larger coils overall characteristics whilst in the field and we will briefly touch on them below.

Ground Balancing..

Being it’s a large coil it takes in huge amount of information so first the most important part is ground balancing, this has to be done on clean metallic free soil, if any targets are under the coil whilst ground balancing will give you a false ground balance or not ground balance at all.

Sensitivity/Gain...

Being it’s a large coil it takes more ground information as said and is especially sensitive to changing ground conditions.

So there maybe occasions that the ground you detect is to sparky for the machine and coil match up, but by reducing the gain or sensitivity or both depending on the Vista model you own this can be tamed.

Don’t be alarmed if I’m some ground conditions you have to run little lower sensitivity or gain settings than say with you would with the likes of the 11” Pitbull coil, this is to be expected in some areas but you will still be able to punch deeper into the ground due to the size comparison between both coils even at low settings.

(My overall thoughts and findings on this 18” Coil...)

Depending on what kHz the Vista Detector you own the different the outcome people will find with how these large coils act in the field.

So people who own the Vista Smart series will find their 18” coil a lot less edgy than people who own the 25/30 kHz Gold models.

But this is all relevant to why you chose you Vista Model in the first place.
30 kHz offers extremely high levels of sensitivity to tiny items, the 15 kHz machines offer less sensitivity and more suited for the less smaller objects.

So the kHz of the Vista machine you’re using is reflected in the 18” coils overall performance in the field so bare this in mind, bigger coil the more amplified everything becomes so adjust setting accordingly.

This coil I personally find this coil ok to sweep in the fields, being it’s a larger coil and of different design to our the previous large deeptech coil what was the 14” Epic it has different feel.
The 18” coil is around the same weight as the Epic but being this new coil has a larger footprint its weight is dispersed better, it don’t feel like a huge mass at the bottom of the shaft.

The coil has great punch through the soil even at low sensitivity levels what I will hopeful show in a upcoming video.
You truly can dial back the sensitivity and still grab targets at the length of a probe with cracking audio.

Talking about audio the same characteristic of different metallic items are there just like with the smaller coils providing you achieve the correct ground balance as with the smaller coils, so silver coins will produce a lovely tone and the lesser the quality of metal objects the audio will falter if on clean ground, if in iron ladened ground resort back to a smaller coil as for one you will not punch deep past iron in abundance, also target audio can be altered around iron no mater what machine you use.

If you want to just search for big deep items what these coils was primarily designed for then I would just go for the big brash clean signals, but if you wish to use these 18” coils for general searching then be prepared to dig a lot of tiny items, also take time to work out where the target it is under the soil due to being a significant step up in size the pinpointing can be a little tricky initially, sweeping from multiple angles will help you find the target easier for sure.

So to sum up the 18” coils you’ll be digging deep, be searching more ground with every sweep, just what a big coil is designed for so good luck and wish you that huge hoard that you’ve always dreamed of.

Aaron.
