18" excelerator coil:detecting:

New member
Greetings everyone,
Today I am taking the 18" excelerator coil to a couple of old parks that have been hunted heavy over the years (HUNTED OUT). Just a little experiment to see if the 18" excel reaches deeper. I have not used the 18" excel to any degree before. If in fact it will hit 18"-21" depths, then there is the possibility of recovering a few good deep targets that have not been recovered:clapping: Happy Hunting Grounds,

I would be very interested in the results of the day. I have heard that 15" is the max. size before you start loosing small coins.
With an 18" coil dimes would be lost shallower then with a smaller coil.
I like the idea of a field test within the forum. As with Mikes small coil.

NH Bob,

Got back from the park, and the results are as follows: sensitivity 22,
gain 10, variability 8, deep. I also tested the coil at various settings. It would pick up Coins about 8" max. The 8" coil would do better depth. I was told by one of our local detector retailers that the smaller coils are more sensitive to coins at greater depths. She said that the large coils are for large items such as cannon balls, cashes, etc; at greater depths. Pinpointing was a little tricky at first, but after several attempts not to bad. Hopefully I will get to go relic hunting next week. Then I will give it a try at larger deeper targets. I might bury a mason jar full of recovered clad 2ft deep and let it sit for a week. Then test it and see. Happy Hunting Grounds,

I had the same test results in my test plot.
More coverage but the depth was not any better than the stock coil and I tried each of all the major players as far as coils go.

Do you use a "swingy-thingy" or something else to help with the weight? I have an 18" excelerator also and the darned thing wears me out! Got to find some way to take the weight off.
Mike

Greetings brnn53,
Actually the weight is a factor with the 18" coil. I do not have any load bearing attachments for it. If I care for my wrists and swing arm I need one. Happy Hunting Grounds,

try large targets at 2' and see what the max depth is that can be attained.
I have had my coil for about a year and a half and want to find out its strengths and weaknesses. Happy Hunting Grounds,

The 18" EXcelerator is very good at finding larger items as the dealer said, but try lowering the sens. to 15 - 12 (especially in mineralized soil) for coin sized objects.
A bungee cord harness is a must with this beast.

Was using my SE on the beach with the stock 10 inch coil and was getting 14 inches out of it for the tiniest targets, like small nuggets and dimes. Wanted to get a larger coil in hopes of more depth and my Sunray dealer was out of 12 inch coils, so I ordered a 14 inch excellerator. It got LESS depth than my stock coil, topped out at about 10 inches. "Find coins as small as dimes 19 inches deep!!!!" My pattooty, I'll give you something 19 inches deep, fricking liars. Now, I could of gotten a bad coil, but bad coils false and such, not just get poor depth, right? Anyone else have a different take on their 14 inch Excellarator coil??? I'd be interested in hearing their results. Good hunting.

Well, I can't speak for the 14" but I have the 12.5" and I have always found it to be excellent. Yes, definitely more depth. Not a GREAT deal more, but a couple of inches maybe. Bigger coils are mostly good for better coverage...and you DO get that. A little extra depth and a little harder to pinpoint with and not as good in trashy spots are also common tendencies. Huge increases in depth I have not seen, but LESS??? That's a first in my experience. My 12.5" Excel pulled a number of deep buttons and bullets at one particular field I have hunted again and again that the stock coil missed. And I find it's construction and quality to be as good as anything out there.

I have been using the swingy-thingy with my WOT for a while now and it the way to go. I can hunt for hours and not get tired

Yeah the less part pissed me off for sure. I have an 8 inch concentric excellarator that's the bomb, so I don't know why this 14 sucks. I thought maybe it was because of trash but even in areas without trash it still got less depth than my stock 10 inch.

I also have the sunray X-12. I like them both. They work well and get great depth. The X-12 will really get deep coins on edge but I have gotten dimes at 14 inches with the excelerator. It has some unbelievable depth. I do know that I can,t find those coins that deep everywhere I hunt. Ever been to a place where nothing was deeper than 5 or 6 inches? I also have hunted places that have been hunted for years with the wot by several guys here and done very well. I like hunting the places that the wot has cleaned out cause they leave plenty behind. Might be like cutting a straight line with a pair of scissors. You may not be holding your mouth quite right.
