Found these on Turkey day....Crosby found the buckle Rybo found the button and I found the spur there is a photo of what the buckle would look like...Crosby found the Spanish imprint

.........as there was no military activity in that area during the 1830's (at least not U.S. military).

The finds pictured are consistent with items found in 1850's-1860's sites around the Ione area.

It is quite common to find items that pre-date the actual occupation of a site by 3 or 4 decades. I've personally dug coins from the 1700's on sites that had no Anglo occupation prior to the 1840's. A quick look in most people's pocket change today, will likely show a few coins dating to the 1960's and maybe earlier.

Nice finds........and I'll be very interested in hearing the 1830's "history" on this particular camp............as this would re-write more than a few books that describe the Eureka region much differently.

Regards,

CC Hunter

P.S. The complete buckle that you have pictured for reference, is a modern cast replica of the actual 1850's buckle.

It was not a military camp, there is no histroy for this camp we found.
