1849 Silver Coin and a Cool Knife

Hello Fellow :twodetecting: Today I graduated from newbie to the real deal. :bouncy:. Within half an hour of firing my ACe 250 with my 9x12 coil. I went to a soccer field where there is the coolest and oldest tree I have ever seen. I should start carrying my camara. It is probably around 200 years old, super wide. I decided to go on the edge of the grass and bam and got a quarter signal at 3 inches. I'm used to stabbing the clad with a pointy screwdriver, since I never find anything that new in my town of Davis,CA. When I saw it coming out I thought it was a metal lid. Then when I cleaned it a bit, I was like OH MY GOD!!!! I couldn't believe it was an 1849 Mexican coin. Then my worse fear came true, I wondered if when I found my first old coin I was going to scratch it and guess what? I scratched it twice!!!! YES I CAN'T BELIEVE I DID THAT TO THIS AWESOME COIN!!! I just thought it was regular clad. I was so happy and so bummed out at the same time. I had to call my lady and tell her about my excitement and my grief at the same time.
After that I tried scanning the same area to see if there was any more of those but that was the only treasure, I kept scanning the rest of the field and ended up with around 8 bucks in clad and I found a rusty knife but with some electrolysis and some oil, it is almost back to new again. Kind of creepy since I found it by the waiting area on the basketball court. The brand is Kershaw, my scanner made the writing on the blade blurry but it looks brand new on both sides. I never heard of the brand but I really liked it!!!
Well, this was the greatest day of my metal detecting career. I love this hobby sooooooooo much!!! I started in August and now I have about 228 dollars in Clad.
I hope you guys have a great rest of the weekend as always!!!!!!!!!!

Nice finds. The Mexi coin is a keeper for sure - no tree will ever look the same again, I can assure you. I've been there myself.

Nice find on that hunt.
Lots of clad to boot.:detecting:

Thanks, It is a 4 Reale Coin, Here is the size compared to a quarter Uncle willy.

awesome, I would suggest using a shovel like this

http://www.upstatedetectors.com/pages/tools.htm

go down to where it says sampson relic digger. Ever since buying a long digger I 100% of the time can dig my target without ANY fear of messing up my find.

good luck, nice find

Great old coin! Keep that knife away from the little guy in your avatar. It looks sharp. $228 in clad from August is a nice total too. I'm guessing you won't have to quit for the Winter. I'll have to catch up in the Spring!

I don't have to worry about the knife with my son, I have to worry about him taking my metal detector. He wont leave it alone lol. :crylol: Yeah, over here is pretty cold but it wont stop me from getting out and relax for few hours. :detecting: I need my fix.
I have been reading how to clean old coins and I pretty much blew it. I washed mine with soap and rub it with my fingers, toothbrush and to scratch my coin more with one of those green pads to wash dishes. I needed to do some research before I cleaned it. What a dork, at least I learned from my mistakes. :nopity:

If you think a coin has any value beyond face or melt don't clean it. I say that all the time.

I clean my clad before putting it back into circulation. Anything older than around 1964, or that I plan on keeping as a collectable, I leave alone.

Chris
