1896-S Barber Dime Before Cleaning

Gerry in Idaho

[attachment 22281 MarchNVm.JPG]Here is a photo I took of the key date 1896-S Barber Dime that AuMarc posted the photo of on a few posts below.

His photo shows after a light cleaning and mine is the fresh out of ground dirty shot.

As an added bonus he found a really cool glass stopper that has a nice purple tint to it.

It is hard to believe that we found (2) of the same coin the same morning and they have a mintage of only 575,000.

I still think his is a strong VF+ or a weak XF and so that is a $300-$400 dime there.

Minelab Explorer ROCKS!!!

Just had to say Congratulations again for finding such a rare coin. You just might get lucky and be able to get the buil-up off of the coin. Trust me, go back to that spot as soon as possible. There had to be a roll of them at the bank in that town and I wouldn't be suprised if you found more of them. Good Luck cleaning that excellent find and hope you find more coins like that this year.

Be careful when cleaning it or it might devalue it. Great find!!!!!!

Congrats again Gerry! Awesome find. I've been fortunate with Barber dimes myself, found 1895, 1895-S, & 1897-O, among others. Be careful cleaning it though, dealers tend to look at cleaned coins as worth quite a bit less than they would be otherwise.

Jeff, Unless you know of a way to remove that black without any damage, then it stays as is.

You have made a few nice Barber Finds and those are all key date coins.

I found an 1895-S last Summer and it was so dark, I did not thing with it. Detail is a strong VF or low EX but when it has that grayish black to it, not much you can do.

I also found 2 Seated Quarters 1877 and 1888-S and both were black. I tried electrolysis on one of them and it looks like..well it doesn't look like a seated coin any more.

Does anyone know a specialist who can clean that crud off?

Thanks, Gerry
