Best thing I did was let my girlfriends father take it into work to weigh it, came back at 2.51 grams. The concensus at where he works is that this is a silver coin. trying to figure what steps to take now, send it in to be certified?? This is the second time(dealer also wieghed it as silver) it has been weighed and checked as a silver coin. If you held it checked it you could not see any difference beside a 1964 Roosie!![attachment 32643 Aug8001.jpg][attachment 32644 Aug9002.jpg]

Did they make a 1992 D proof set???

Do us all a favor and take it to a coin dealer or ask a dealer on the internet if this could possibly be a silver dime and put this to rest and end the suspense for all of us...........:) We can all guess and speculate until the cows come home, but until you have it checked out by a professional dealer then we will never know and neither will you. I hope it is silver Jack............:) HH.

Hi.

What does the explorer tell u, try 10 silvers and 10 clads. It should tell you something.

Dont mess with it,if this is the real thing you should keep it in a bank vault not attaching paperclips to it now and then ( LOL ) it is then immensly valuable. Write a mail to the link I gave in the first post and let them handle the coin.A coindealer will just dont know as anyone else. The coin should not exist just as the 1959 D cent that has appeared and they dont know how to handle it even after the goverment sertifies it.

At the site they also mention the 43 copper cent that was minted in less then a dozen before they changed to Iron planchets. Errors do happen and we have not seen all yet.

I'd call a coin collecting magazine and tell them what you have. Quick test.. Weight means it is probably silver, does it hit on you minelab like silver does. That would make it almost certain. Could be a fake but certainly sound like a mint errror.

All the 1992 proof dimes on the web are "S" mint mark, not "D". I guess it could be silver but I doubt that it is genuine. Why would the San Fransico mint stamp a coin with a D anyway? I guess its possible someone at the Denver mint could be playing tricks, who knows. Good luck.

I have a 2001-D Roosevelt Dime that I found when searching for silver dimes from banks. I check the sides of the coins when I do it and found it. It appears to be silver since there is no copper reed on it. Mine also looks like it would have come from a mint or proof set since it is in such great condition.

Is it possible that these "silver" dimes are clad such that the clad skin is simply covering the copper reed? The other guy weighed his, but I'm not sure what the weight differential is between silver and clad. I do know that if you drop a silver dime on a glass or hard counter it has a different (lower piched) sound than clad.

The weight for a Silver Roosevelt Dime is 2.50 Grams and the weight ratio for a Clad Roosevelt Dime is 2.27 Grams. Assuming that both Dimes have little wear since more wear will make the coin weigh less. Just thought you would like to know!
