1st hunt of '09. Cabin Fever GO AWAY. Silver COME HERE

Thank goodness...the head/chest cold that has lingered for weeks now has started to go away. I figured I might as well do away with the cabin fever as well....before it got any worse. :stars:

My work schedule is really going to cut into my hunt time this year...but I will get out when I can..and will do my best to keep up with everyone's posts here on the forum.

I decided to go to a site that has produced well over the years...but has been pounded to death as well. I don't believe I've ever found anything too old here...but always seem to pop out some silver hidin' deep. It's an old ball diamond...but they put about 5" of fill dirt over it about 5 years ago. The fill covers the ground all the way to the edge of the outfield...so all the silver is in excess of 7" deep. In fact most of the coins I've found here in the last 3 years have been in the 8" to 10" range.

Today was no exception. The ground was nice and moist...and was also fairly clean of trash.

I decided to do the UNTHINKABLE....to take off the 10 x 12 SEF for a short time...and give another coil a shot for the first time in many months:yikes:.

Since it was a sweet open area...devoid of trash...and the targets were at extreme depths...I opted for the 10 x 14 Excelerator Coil. It's the only coil I know of that comes close to the performance and depth of my 10 x 12 SEF coil...but it's one heavy sucker. :smoke:

Over the next 4 hours I popped out 3 Mercs and 11 Wheaties...all at depths of at least 8". One of the wheaties was at 10" and nearly straight on edge...and it made me remember why I liked the 10 x 14 coil:super:...but a sore arm reminded me as to why I use it mostly for short periods of time.:bouncy:

I then met up with the Yeti (niterider_58 ... at a park we have hit a zillion times in the last 2 years. I decided to put the 10 x 12 SEF coil back on because I realized we hadn't pounded this site with anything other than the 1050 coil. It WON'T be coming off again unless I opt for a small coil at some extremely trash filled spots.

Over the next 3 hours I popped out a roosey....a washington quarter...an injun'...a HUGE sterling silver ring...7 more wheaties...and two foreign coins.
What a letdown the big one was...as I thought I had dug a large cent...only to find out it was a 1918 British? penny.

I think the Yeti ended up with a couple silver...a handful of wheats...and an old stickpin of some type. He is really liking the 10 x 12 SEF coil on his XS. :clapping:

My roosey....the washington quarter...the injun'...and 4 of the 7 wheaties were all found while the SE was in a dead null while over iron.
In fact...the 1899 injun' was right at 9" deep in the hole with iron...and screamed through the silence. This startled me...as I was ready to nod off after nearly a 10 second null....before the injun came through.:crylol:

I've always been told...as have many others...that the SE won't find coins while nulling. If that's the case...I guess I need to throw around 50 to 60 of the 200 silver coins back to the ground...that I found in '08:smoke:...and about half the coins I found in today's hunt. My SE wasn't resetting...or recovering...it was in a complete dead null when those coins were found. I do not have a sceintific explanation...nor a reason as to why it works...when it "ISN'T" supposed to....but it DOES. :please: It WILL find and hit deep silver while nulling if your iron mask and other settings are right for you.:beers: I've proven it over and over again...and continue to do so each time I hunt. I don't know about the xs or EX2...but my SE will.

I'm not looking to tell you conductive/iron mask is better than ferrous/All metal. I do not care how you hunt or what settings you use. We all have our own personal preferences as to what style works best for each of us....what headphones we use...and what coil we choose. If you are an all metal/ferrous hunter...and you're making good finds with it....that's great. That proves two facts....1) that some prefer to hear everything in the ground...and 2) some prefer to hear what they choose to. It's OUR choice:thumbup:...and the explorers make that possible for us. The only point I'm trying to make is that the SE WILL hit deep silver for me while nulling. It is not even a discussion for me as to whether or not it will or won't.:)

To me this forum is about sharing settings...hunting styles...finds...making friends...voicing opinions...giving tips if asked...etc.
We then have the option to decide what's best for each of us.That's what makes this hobby and this forum so wonderful.

Nice going Bryce. I knew it wouldn't be long before you were hunting again. Next time give me a call if you get the time so I can tag along. I am working on a couple of new spots for us this year.

Nice to be getting out again isn't it? Congrats on the silver and the Indian and a change of coils, even for a short time is always good, no need to be stuck using just one coil, even if it has been producing well!! I think if people think because the Explorer won't find coins in a null, then they lose out on some decent finds. I've found a bucket full of coins when my detector was nulling out. I will continue detecting if it nulls, can't do anything about except dig the good sounds!! If you decide to throw those silver coins away, I've got a bucket you can throw them in!!

Hey Bryce, great finds. It's always great to see the silver. I'm hoping to come out of my winter cave in the next couple weeks and get back in the field. Haven't had a chance to do much over the winter but seeing these finds is giving me that itch to get back out there. If i can find an open weekend with some decent weather this spring I'll venture up your way.

Later,
Kelly

Bryce
I have said it over and over, YOU ARE THE MAN!!!! lol great finds!!!!! I am really happy to see you back at it!!!!! And well said my friend!!!! This forum is about making friends NOT enemy's :buds:!!!!! Good luck!!!!

Bryce..well said my friend..I love this hobby as much as the rest of us here, and the last thing I want to do is to say or do anything to offend anyone. I think sometimes typing on a forum trying to explain youself, doesnt always come out the way you want it to, but till we can talk on microphones on here, its all we got! Getting back to the target hitting while nulling..Now you and Derrelld got me thinking....next time out I gotta try and see if I get the same results on my Exp2. Wish I had a Target garden..I'll find a way.But he said the same thing ..while nulling. Great stuff man, and thanks for the post and the info..HH!!

Thanks for responding bro.
I'm not sure how it would be on the EX2. I know it isn't for everyone...creeping to a near standstill...and sometimes just simply standing there in the iron...trying to squeeze a peep throught the silence.
We all have little things that can help others out...and this forum is an awesome place for that. I've picked up some nice tips here over the years. Some worked for me...and some didn't...but I gave them all a shot.
Take care...and good luck in '09

isn't helping me feel any younger. At least the cabin fever has disappeared for a while.
I didn't find any super goodies...or any super valuables...but silver is silver...and I'll take it any day. Sure as heck beats the snot out of arguing about what works and what doesn't...or how you should hunt or shouldn't hunt. Take care bro.

how you were doing. I didn't know what happened to you. All of a sudden I stopped seeing any posts from you...and didn't hear from you.
If you get some free time...and I can get some matching free time....cruise down my way and maybe we can scare up a wheatie or 2 somewhere.
Take care buddy

Thanks Darrell. I definately will buddy. I won't have near the hunt time I had last year though. We can surely squeeze in a few hunts this season though:thumbup:
I would like to hit that cabin site another time or 2. Do you know if it's grown up very much? Let me know bro.

I have to admit...it was hard for me to take the SEF coil off even if just for a few hours. You're right though...and you have a great point. Each and every coil has the ability to sniff out something the other coils missed. Your point is a good one to remember...and one I'm guilty of not taking advantge of often enough.
Thanks for the tip:thumbup:
