Hello everyone, had a great day yesterday, felt good to be back detecting again.
I've metal detected in the past, years ago with a old whites 5900. Used it for years and it finally went to the great hunting grounds in the sky. So I didn't detect for several years and started reading/studying/researching the different makes and models. Ended up deciding to try the minelab x-terra 705 so I bought a used 1 off ebay that that had a 6" digger coil included with it.
So I took it out in the yard and used it for around 1/2 hour to start to learn the machine. Then I figured I'd take it to one of the hardest places I've found to detect, under/next to the chain link fence that's around the track at the county fair grounds. Needless to say it was a hand full with the metal fence and all the foil/trash in the extremely dry soil. But it was also an excellent learning experience trying to pick out targets between the down time and multiple pieces of junk next to good targets. Ended up digging allot of junk trying to learn the different #'s and sounds. But I also found a couple keepers along with some modern clad.
I liked the old horse button, has that old look to it. The silver was worn but it was still sweet to be able to pull it out of the ground. A 1891 seated dime, 1904 barber quarter and a 1956 silver dime and 2 wheat pennies (1919/1926) that were in bad shape.
The 705 is going to take some getting used to. Time in the field is the best teacher and the 705 will provide me with a test bed to understand modern metal detectors. Right know I know it's a good machine, just don't have a clue on how good it is yet.
Anyway, thank you for your posts on this forum. Read them for months studying the different detectors & the 705 had what I'm looking for. A coin hunter in high trash areas along with the ability to hunt fields and beaches.
