After my sucsess with the little hammered coin 2 weeks ago, I thought I'd keep the 18.75k 5x10 coil on. Glad I did cuz I found this on my very next trip out with it. best signal I had all day....locked on really well at about 22, sounded like it was on edge too with a double response.

Hard too make out who it is but hey! its my 1st Roman coin.

...great skills Clive.....

Gaz.

Thanks Gaz,

LN, It was about 5 inches down, no more than 6 for sure.

By the way Gaz, have you ever found a coin that gave a TID of -2 or +2, +4 etc?. I've been told that some coins come in at these low numbers....but the lowest I've ever seen a coin is about 18?

Clive

Nice Find!!! Makes the hobby worthwhile.I have heard some coins give - TIDs which has worried me because I tend to ignore them (fed-up of digging nails) The Saxon coin i found gave a TID of 6 in one sweep and 8 in the other.

Cheers Chris,

That's really interesting. I've never had one go that low, did the signal change when you got it out?. How did it clean up by the way?

Clive

Hi Clive,
Yes the TID did change when the coin was out the ground. I have not managed to clean the coin much, soaked in olive oil for several hours and patted with cotton wool, Do you find the 18k coil better?

.....to be honest mate.....I can't remember!!!
I have dug and always dig positive numbers....no matter how low. I run 2 tones so dig all high tones.
I have dug non-ferrous rubbish in the single digits so it could of been anything.

Some people may shout at me but I don't dig any low tones......I'm sure it's all trash down there. We tried a few sessions digging low minus numbers and it was all rubbish.
As long as I'm auto tracking....I'm correctly GB'd.

Ok gas, thanks for that.

Chris, I've only been out with the 18.75k twice, the 1st time I found my 1st hammered, and the 2nd time my 1st Roman! Call it a fluke maybe. I do think it is more sensitive to smaller items though.

Congrats on your first Roman, they are a buzz to find! The 10.5" DD 7.5 KHz coil does very well and gets some depth, just a little heavier. The stock coil is great on farm fields. HH, Mike

Thanks BM

Strange though, that I used the 10.5" 7.5k DD coil for all my detecting since March and never found any hammered or Roman, and then when I swapped I find both in the 1st 2 outings?
