i've been trying this out! and soon to make a video about it! guys it does work try it! it WILL work on explorers and pick up targets not found before! i dont care who argues. put it to the test!

Weston

Can't wait to see how you do it!!!

I'm looking forward to seeing the video!

What settings do you use Weston?

after reading the E-Trac Forum I was thinking that it would be nice to be able to set the number of tones on the Explorer like the E-Trac...looking forward to your video, Weston :)

Hi Chris, I had to check because I don't generally change it. The range for Variability (change in pitch relative to the position of the cursor onthe X or Y axis, i.e., Conductive or Ferrous is 1 - 10. I'm assuming if you set it to 1 you will only get a single pitch for all targets, 2 - 2 tone, 3 - 3 tone, etc. On the face of it 2-tone sounds silly (almost like 1-tone which is beep and dig ), but who knows....I have not been following the threads on the E-Track forum. I suspect some settings on these machines have been hardcoded or at least end up putting the electronics in a particular mode. As you know I think the programming on these machines is pretty bad and could be light-years ahead of where it is. I'm a high-frequency trading algo developer on Wall St. and could make this software sing (the hardware is far ahead of the software ), but Minelab never responds to my offers to do so :ban: other than tell us for free what you think is good!

I believe Tony Hunt and his group over on the minelabowners site from Europe has always started new people out using a setting something like 1 1 10 to make learning the Explorers easier. I think you will find their site interesting because they try all kinds of setting, sensitivities, and hunting tech. These guys have a tremendous amount of experience and even more skill. That 1 1 10 might be what you are doing.... if not im always open to different options especially on those hard sites.

Eric it would be interesting to see what some of the computer Gurus could do with a detector they could up load and down load data to. Chuck im pretty certain Tony's settings will work on the XS, but go to their site and ask him. He can answer about any question you need answered about the Explorers.

i think it is Tony's 10-6-6 programme you are referring to and yes these settings are for the xs as well

if hunting with 2 tones, how can you tell a pull-tab from a coin? smartscreen isnt always right, so i usually hunt by sound only

I run my XS in Iron Mask wide open wth Ferrous Sounds, and watch the crosshairs.Works great for me.

Ignore the low tones and dig the higher tones.

Jeff,

This setup is mainly for iron infested sites, when you're looking to dig anything that is "not" iron. So iron would give a low tone, and everything else, a high tone. The guys on the E-Trac forum have been using this setup at old farm fields and homesteads littered with iron with good success. Using no discrimination helps the recovery time of the detector, making it faster around all the iron without the nulling. This setup is not recommended for sites littered with aluminum, such as a trashy, urban park, unless one wants to dig everything that is not iron, or look down at the screen for every high beep to see where it is on the smartfind. :look:

I'm a little skeptical myself on how similar you can get 2 tone ferrous functionality on an Explorer to that of the E-Tracs 2-tone ferrous feature.

Lowering variability only makes finds that are further apart on the conductive scale (such as foil and quarters) , and on the ferrous scale (such as iron and anything that's not iron) sound more similar. There's not a defined cutoff point, as in the E-Trac's 2-tone Ferrous (Ferrous 17) where all targets below ferrous 17 will give a high tone, while all targets above ferrous 17 will give a low tone.

Not sure how this will be accomplished on an Explorer. The E-Tracs also have variability and Limits settings, but the # of tones is a completely different setting, that I believe, when in 2-tone, will make the variability/limits values non-applicable.

ok to answer a few questions. how you put your detector in 2 tone ferrous. its simple enough select Ferrous then take your variability down to 2 and clear the smart screen and press detect. once you've done that take the sound of threshold away, as it is a sound you wont need anymore because your screen is open all the way anyways. only thing i find bad about this is you cant save it as a setting like the Etrac. you have to go back, and reset everything back to the way you want it when your done. to all the skeptics try it yourself. i have a buddy that uses an Etrac and he started using 2 tone ferrous and he told me i should try it on my SE. i pretty much told him it wouldn't work and i thought he was crazy. YES I WAS A SKEPTIC TOO! i tried it and at first i was believing this couldn't work, because i was a skeptic. but the more i tried it, the more i realized hey this really works! i have house site i have been hunting for about 3 years, and I've sucked about every signal out of this yard. i can walk around for hours and get 1 or 2 signals! so, this is the perfect place to test this out! i am still testing this, but i invite you to try it for yourself! what do you got to lose!:bouncy:
