2hr Field Hunt

Old Longhair

Crazy Ol' Foole
Staff member
Hunted a stubble field today that I can literally see from my front window. I've been over there before, but chasing where various maps put the home until now was fruitless.
This time, I had just taken another good look at an 1859 topo map, when they pulled into the field with a 250hp tractor and a 34ft disk. All they were doing was running down and busting up the corn stubble and shocks (which made hunting much easier).

With my new found info and the 705 w/15" 3kHz Al Terrain coil on I started finding targets right away. Ended up with an 1844 Bank of Montreal half penny token, an 1847 Large Cent, an 1820 Large Cent that had been drilled for use as a button, two back marked buttons with intact shanks, an old plated spoon, and a small whatzit.

Wow!! Fantastic finds in just 2 hours. What is the thing with the eagle.

OK, here's what I have on it. It's not a pin, it's actually a button with the shank broken off.

WOW, them are some really great finds longhair.

That LC made in to a button is cool but the U.S.I button is the find of the day. Did you find out if it has any kind of value?

In it's condition, it's worth more to me than anyone else.

some cool artifacts...interesting too this MDer that has no knowledge of such finds. keep at it & good luck!!

Awesome finds OLH :) I've found one and a half of those Bank of Lower Canada tokens this year, as well... both 1844 :) One was cut in half! Yours is in really good shape... don't often see them with a date that crisp... must have some friendly soil there! Love the LCs and buttons, too! congrats... great hunt :)

pretty sweet finds OLH. I have been pondering that big 15inch 3 kHz coil. Youre success with it is making me want it more!

Nice find, I wish our large cents help up that well around here.

Ha! I just noticed that I didn't post a close up of the 1820 LC. It could have been used as a button, or as a whizzer/whirligig toy like we used to make with coat buttons.

whizzer/whirligig toy like we used to make with coat buttons...Those memories make me feel old.. Real nice finds, congrats.

:please: Great hunt OLH. Congrats on the finds. More importantly (IMO) congrats for not giving up on a site that had been fruitless in the past. Nicely done. :clapping: HH Randy
