2nd coil after stock 10.5 slimline?

BlackX

New member
Sun Ray 5" or 8"? Something else?

Hi BlackX,
your next coil will be the next one you need to get a particular job done...

If you snoop around old house site ruins, and you want to peek between trash to locate hidden keepers, then you'll be looking for a 5" or 8" coil...
On the other hand you might want to go deep, and maybe scan a lot of area at a beach; so you'll be looking maybe for a large WOT.

Decide what you want to do next, then make a coil choice to achieve the results.

If you are still learning it, you would definitely pick the SR 8, it wouldn't seem the difference between a 8 and 10.5 inch would be that great, but it is a huge difference. Snowy is right, if you are going to be concentrating in thick trash, then you will eventually need a much smaller coil, but for all around medium trash, the 8 is the way to go. Even after you get a 5 inch coil, it still takes allot of knowledge to be effective with it in trash, your best bet would be to get used to hunting in all metal first and then moving into the thick trash. Even with a small coil, when using discrimination, you will be nulling out too much to be effective; small coil or otherwise. I never understood why ML would ship the SE with the 10.5 inch coil as it is literally too big for most applications. Yes it will go deeper than a smaller coil, but only in clean ground, which is rare to begin with. It is way easier to learn the machine with a smaller coil and the SR 8 is a better coil then the ML 8.
