2nd hunt of my life and found a bullet. Can anyone ID?

Been doing my research and thought I would hit up the Grant memorial in Lincoln Park Chicago (circa 1901). Thought I would find old coins but found a bullet instead! Does this look familiar to anyone?

Well, Fmj, looks like .30 cal. Could be 30-40 krag, 30-30 win. Or maybe 32 win special. Maybe later, like 30.06 .308 win. Could be just about anything, 300 win magnum..but to big for .30 carbine. Good luck.

humm not sure from my end...never really know around the chicago area.....

Hi Folks; Appears to be WW1 or WW2 era due to patina and casing grip marks at its base. Hope this helps narrow it down. What else was found in that area??? By looking at those finds age you can better pinpoint its own age. That in turn will narrow the field of weapons used it came from ok. PEACE:RONB

Not a 30-30. They load in a tubular magazine, and therefore are round nosed.
The case grip groove makes me also think military. The trouble is, the US Military used the same bullet for every major combat weapon from 1918, through the first few years of Vietnam. .355 inch, and 150 grain FMJ. M-1 Garand (30.06) M60 (7.72 NATO, or .308 Winchester for you civilians) All sniper bolt actions, etc.

The .30cal carbine used a 115 grain bullet. (same diameter)

No telling when it was "deposited" as vendors were selling 30 cal surplus well into the 90s.

Roger on the tubular magazine. But, whats the .355? All bullets mentioned by me were ,308. "38" caliber is .357. Is .355 9mm?

I vote .30 Cal military...FMJ.

Can you REALLY detect in that park...I mean legally? WOW!

Good Luck to ya!

Legally? I have no clue. I guess I should consider that and find out before I hit up the parks! There are no rangers or anything and I only see cops out there during events like the Air and Water Show or Marathons.

It's a 155 grain fmj (full metal jacket) .308 winchester or more specifically a 7.62 x 51(7.62 Nato) miltary bullet.
