2ND Hunt With Quattro...And a COLD ONE!

Probably not to some of you, and 30 degrees isn't TOO bad, but that wind was blowing and the wind chill was brutal. But after the Christmas thing with the family, the new machine was calling my name, so...
I went back to an old house site that we nicknamed "The Barber House" because over the years more of those were found there than anything probably. I've hunted the place so many times I can't count any more, as have a number of my friends. Items found there range from a late 1700's coin and Revolutionary War buttons to about maybe the early 1990's...and everything in between. The house was probably turn-of-the-century, but there's old red brick in parts of the yard that indicate earlier structures. It's been hunted so many times that there is very little left to find anymore. Oh, there are a few things there...but the place is also RICH with old nails, roof tacks, etc. and if I hunt with my CZ with the Iron notched in it's getting iron signals everywhere, so you really have to work around the iron and it masks a lot of targets.
I hunted this house for the first times years ago...detectors I've used here...GTAx-750, DFX, CZ-70, Sovereign Elite. All did very well and found lots of stuff. As time went by, less and less was found. These days it's beg-borrow-or-steal...tough hunt site.
This is what it looked like for years before they tore it down....boarded up.

This is what it has looked like for the last couple of years...you can hardly tell there was ever a house there now.

So, enter the Quattro. For one, it was nulling a lot...testament to the aforementioned iron. I kept the sweep slow and tried to maintain my threshold and did for the most part. I wasn't there for 5 minutes and I got a nice 30-ish signal at about 8 to 10 inches. It was a button, Colonial looking, no apparent markings...shank intact.
It looks a lot like the Revolutionary War button I found there some years ago but that one is British and says "G1R" on it. I've also pulled a "Script I" button at this site. This one looks blank...no markings I can make out. Here it is:

After that, I was pretty much too cold to take any more pictures, so I just hunted for a while until I couldn't stand it any more. I pulled an 1892 Barber dime, another flat button with no shank, a nice 1902 Indian penny, and a 1980 Corvette Hot Wheels car. All were deep and impressively strong signals for the conditions. I can say with near certainty that I passed all of my previous machines over most if not all of these targets and for whatever reason did not dig them. It's my intention to go back to this place with the Quattro until I can no longer find anything good. I'm pretty stoked about this machine.
Here's the final take for the couple of hours I could stand it. Oh, and I think that thing next to the Barber is a gun hammer, maybe from a cap pistol?

Tomorrow I'm going bullet hunting at another pounded out site, this one with some heavy duty power lines that have given most of my machines fits in the past. It's been hunted for over 15 years by anybody with a detector. I once found 15 minnieballs there in one outing but the last few times, nothing. I think there may be a few more yet and I'm hoping that the FBS will come through for me around those power lines. Happy hunting and Merry Christmas!

powerlines have no effect on the explorer, and i suspect the same will hold true for the quattro.
these minelabs are so fun and pleasant to use, while other machines can drive you nuts with chirps, pops, falses, and interference chatter.
i think you're going to have a good day under those powerlines.

Yeah, I think you're right. It seems to be basically an Explorer in a little more user-friendly package.
And while I did make a few finds at this location with my Sovereign Elite that other machines missed, it didn't seem quite as able to pick good targets out of the iron trash as the Quattro was.
The weather tomorrow is calling for a rain/snow mix in the afternoon. Hopefully we'll get our hunt in before it turns cruddy.

When they say "No place is EVER hunted out", they aren't kidding. The proof is in the pudding with that place. Best single hunt spot ever. And STILL going. You just don't find 'em like that much anymore.

Nice finds! It seems from initial reports that Minelab has done their homework. I will also say that 30 degrees with no wind is a nice day for detecting. 30 degrees with a consistant wind will take the heat right out of you and make it impossible to hunt. I hunt almost all year around and wind can be a problem even in the 30's. Keep us posted on how the Quattro is working. HH!

Hiya Mike,
Well done on the finds.
I have been using a Quattro for about a month
my other machine is an Elite with a Detech 14 1/2"
Search head which was the best machine i have ever used
The Quattro beats the pants off it.
Am waiting for tides to be good and then will test on
some very mineralised beaches.
Inland i can vouch for its depth versatility and simplicity to use.
I think i have all i need now in detectors for any site.
Seasons greetings from Wales to all peeps.
Regards Paul.

That's my impression as well, Paul...the Quattro is fast making an FBS believer out of me. I've been hunting with a Sovereign Elite with an S-12 Intruder for the beach (and some land) and a Fisher CZ-70 for the land mostly. Now that I have the Quattro, I don't see myself using anything else for the land. I'm keeping my CZ but selling the Elite. And I have a new Excal for the beach which I put together and air tested but other than that have just looked at it and held it so far. The Elite was a beach demon for me though. And I know I'll love the Excal. But now I'm really hyped on trying the Quattro on the beach as well, because this in one cool machine.
Happy hunting man. Glad to hear somebody else is as thrilled with their new Quattro as I am. By the way, what is your feeling on the sensitivty question asked by Robert, above, and aswered by me? Anything to add to that?

Bill, so far the Quattro is impressing the heck out of me. And I agree with you on Minelab doing their homework. Or listening to the people. It seems there are numerous improvements in quality to their whole line...the Sovereign Elite has some nice improvements over the older ones...I have an Elite. The Explorer II is hugely popular...and more rugged. I've seen a lot more people beach hunting with them too lately. And the balance, build, and overall design of the Quattro is very rugged, hi-tech, and attractive all at the same time.
I'm bumming today man...I had a great hunt planned with my buds and we were going out at 8 AM and when we got up it was snowing and is expected to turn to slurpee and then snow and then slurpeee again. So we had to cancel. I had fresh btteries in the Quattro, my camera, bought some new gloves even...
Oh well. There will be other hunt days.

Hi Mike, glad to hear the good report on the Quattro,as I got a new one this past week.Havent been able to get out with it yet due to the weather and my deep chest cold, but maybe by this weekend.Sure sounds like we got a winner here,I liked the looks of the Quattro the first time I saw it,I thought to myself thats gonna be a top dog detector,so I traded my cz3d on one.Do you ever get down Corolla way?I go up there a lot in the fall, some great jewelry sometimes and miles of clean beach, its about a hour and twenty minutes to NagsHead from my house,so cant go every week, but I love beach hunting, now my Sovereign will probably take a backseat, put it on vacation so to speak, well bud, enjoyed your post, take care and dont freeze,Cal

Mike,
I have run in Auto mainly and tried in Manual sensitivity as well.on average ground and on wet sand
there appears to be some gain in manual setting as high as you can go without falsing but on hot mineralised ground run in auto you do not seem to lose any depth.
And the pin point graph is a peach aint it.
As i said i am well impressed.
Have tested against explorer one and twos at rally
and could find all they could.
BUT If you know how to use an explorer and can add a
deep seeking programme then you can get more from it than the Quattro but not much.
It can find extremely small items at great depth.
I have noticed a slight delay in changing from pinpoint mode back to relic but not the other way?
An aluminium can comes up as no.37 in the silver range.
And one other observation no matter which batteries you use after about 25 mins the battery charge indicator drops to two segments?.
Thats about all i can think off at present.
Looking forward to reading Andy Sabisch new book on quattro.
HH Andy and keep reports coming in,i will do likewise.
Seasons Greetings Paul.

Hi Mike,
I am really new to the FBS but could not resist the Quattro. How were you able to maintain a threshold when the machine nulled out?
Thanks
Don

It was a US Navy Officer quarters at one time and it fell into what was considered "sub-standard housing" by the criteria used for that kind of thing. So they demolished it. There were actually 3 houses...that was the last to go. The other two were beyond that one...you're basically looking at the 3 lots in a row. There are no plans I know of to do anything with it in the immediate future, so I plan to hunt it until they do.

Yeah, Paul, you got that right about the pinpoint graph...I love that thing. Very well implemented. And even though it was cold as it was, it seemed unaffected. And even on the real deep targets, when it looked like maybe it might not pinpoint, I was able to "massage it" and get a rise on the graph and eventually fill in the box. And it's dead accurate.
Glad to see there are quite a few Quattro folks coming out. I haven't heard anybody say they don't like it yet...that's a good sign. I'm looking forward to reading Andy's book too.
As for the batteries, I'm using Energizer alkalines and the first day I was out for about 3 hours and it never came off of full. The second day it dropped a mark pretty quick and another after another hour or so. Of course the more you pinpoint the quicker it will drain batteries. As with any machine. That's why it pays to try to master pinpointing without using pinpoint/all metal. Like with my Sovereign Elite, I NEVER use it. So easy to pinpoint without it. But with the Quattro, that pinpoint graph is so fun I want to pinpoint.
Take care and happy hunting!

Same Thing happens in Canada Two
thease houses are slated for demo (1840s)

Yeah, I saw on the TV that the east coast was getting some snow. For once we aren't in the line of fire so far and you guys are. It's in the teens here and that makes it very hard digging.... if you can... I maybe done until spring thaw... If I am done I won't be happy. I was digging last year until late Januaury. Good Luck!
