from some others, and they will even differ more between the different makes and models that I have in hand at the time. Not all 2-Tone and 3-Tone designs are the same between brands or, for that matter, even within one brand between different models.
Keith, Tom and others have provided a lot of help for you and others trying to decide what to use, but in the end it is really up to the end-user as to what they feel works best for them. My personal opinions are based on personal enjoyment of the Makro Racer in a broad range of hunting scenarios, but the bulk of them have been trashy to very trashy old town sites. A lot of debris, most especially annoying iron with the nails being the biggest offender and cause for close-target masking.
I like the 2-Tone operation with the VCO audio for non-ferrous targets, but mainly in a more sparse situation, such as working a fresh-water beach, plowed field, or a woodland area when hunting for anything man made and left behind ... especially nails that signal a possible old structure site. But the bulk of my detecting time is devoted to hunting dense iron littered ghost towns and similar old-use sites. For that I keep the smaller
'OOR' coil on the Racer almost exclusively. If I want to use a bigger coil, I grab a different detector that is more comfortable for me.

With the Racer/
'OOR' combination in dense trash I almost exclusively use the 3-Tone mode. I find it 'better' because of how the Racer performs and the excellent audio response. It produces a louder audio hit which, with my impaired hearing, helps me find more good stuff in nasty junk. It has some great audio subtleties you can learn, and with a slow-and-methodical sweep it is simply deadly in iron infested conditions.
One thing that Keith mentioned and I strongly urge anyone to learn and be attentive to is the 3-Tone mode's
medium tone. I find too many times a person trying to learn the Racer and also learn how to set the Disc. low to hear the Low-Tone for Iron, seems to then be very alert to the pronounced Higher-tone response, be the mid-tone kind of gets a little 'muddied' as being lower and close to the iron audio and not as 'alerting' as the high-tone. Learn and listen for the middle tone, to be sure!
I run it at '10' default most of the time and never increase it higher than '23'/'24' to just bas=rely reject most iron nails at times. I prefer not to use more Discrimination than just enough to barely reject iron nails.
Pros: ? The Racer is simply the best of the modern digitally based detectors I have used, with that little
'OOR' coil, to get in and hunt up the good targets in nasty iron clutter. It is quick and easy to get set-up and into action at any site, and also make selection changes on the fly pretty easy as well.
Cons ? I don't like the abrupt grip of the 'S' rod with any of the larger coils, to include the 5½X10 or 7X11.and they just do not perform,
for me and my needs, like the
'OOR' coil does.
