30 days with the X-Terra 505

All,
Well I just finished my thirty days in the hole :) with the 505, some very interesting thoughts:

1) The learning curve for me was about 2 weeks and that is for someone who's never owned ANY metal detector, (hats off to Minelab) I

Would say your doing pretty good depth wise for your first 30 days with the XT-505, you'll gain more depth as you become more experienced with it. You can gain additional depth by up-grading your earphones to the best available, slowing down your sweep speed, shortening the lenght of your sweep and by going to All Metal and digging more targets in the foil and pulltab range so as to find more rings, especially gold. My area like yours has been cleaned out of silver for the most part by previous detectorists, to overcome this try scouting for out of the way sites and their fringes which hopefully haven't been hit much before (we have many long gone homes and camps in my area, incuding a few towns too). Hope these tips are of help. Am curious to why you are notching out 3, 6 & 9, that is in some of the best small gold jewelry and ring range. Realize there is a ton of foil in that range too... P.S. My last silver was a 1964 Rosie dime and it made my whole month!

Mtnmn,
Thanks much for the feedback!! I meant to say -3 -6 -9 and 48, forgot the minus..... i have been going pretty slow, its just like a golf swing if you're new to a hobby/sport its good to get proper instruction as to not develop poor habits and muscle memory, i think i may have watched EVERY You-Tube video on metal detecting there is LOL!!! i do use good over the ear headphones lemme tell ya I have dug my share of crap here, piles of it i am now being more selective in what i dig!!! i am also considering an E-trac and like you using the 505 for a back-up or for my wife if she ever decides to give it a go...Congrats on the Rosie, that is what i am questing for... what state are you in???

As you can see, I made many changes to my message, sorry about that.. Am from the mountains of north-central PA. Almost every small hollow here originally had either woodhick homes or hunting camps in them, many of which are now long gone. Intend to find their sites by either using the prospecting mode or all-metal mode and then search them much more throughly in pattern one if too trashy, rather than keep hunting today's modern day hard hit parks and digging up plenty of clad and almost no silver...

Mtnmn,
No worries buddy, you're lucky to have a lot more history in Pa. than we do in norcal... i think im gonna look for some old 49er stuff, and give the parks and schools a rest for a while i do have some old topo maps. We used to have a dredge when i was a young boy, mid 60's so im gonna drag em out and scour them for places to go... best of luck hunting the hollers, all my kin is from the south, North Carilina and i was born in Maryland, right next door :)

Well,
Over 122 views and a reply from only one soul... hmm, interesting... guess not many folks here from Northern California, that or their ashamed to admit it  !!!

One thing that might help gain you a little more depth is getting a 10.5" DD coil for your XT-505. Though in my own case I've only gained about an extra inch of depth over the stock coil. Though some say they've gained quite a bit more than that in their soil conditions. Where 10.5" really shines is when you have a lot of ground to cover, I'll use it every time because of the wider swath of ground that the DD coil covers as compared to a concentric..

Mtnmn,
Yup considered that buddy, I have the 6 DD 18.75 kHz coil I know its not as deep as the 7.5 10 1/2 in tho... I think I'm just gonna save my $$$ for an E-trac, not that the 505 is a bad detector, man this thing is awesome and I ALWAYS find stuff with it, just not the deep goodies I feel are hiding just below my range... This is why I was really hoping some peeps from the Sacto area would chime in... :(

I don't want their GPS coordinates just their input on the public places they have hunted around here... Hope your weekend weather permits ya to get to the hollers and hunt some, good luck buddy and keep us informed of your finds... You are so lucky to have the history there man I'm jealous!!
