305 Depth

Fellow 305 owners. What can I expect in depth for coins now that I am getting more familiar with my 305? Just wondering if I am going to be able to expect 8" pennies like I see on videos.
Thanks

Though I've had way more hours (300 - 50) on the E-Trac than the 305, I do have some experience. The reason I got the E-Trac was I really did not hit any coins over 7" much with the 305. Maybe I did not have enough experience. What I did learn and have tried this in "True, dug up, lost for 100 yrs, old coin" test with my wife as a witness. The X-Terra DID not give a SOLID (I'm going to dig this no matter what) type of signal. It was sporadic at best and an iffy, trashy type signal. That was running in 9 sensitivity on the X-Terra, stock coil. The signal was very consistant with the E-Trac. Ground moisture will vary this as well for sure. Ours was semi-moist at that depth. You really have to overlap by about

If you have your 305 properly adjusted, and the soil conditions don't warrant the use of a DD coil, you should have no problem hitting a copper cent at 8 inches with a 9-inch concentric coil. If the mineralization is high, switching to one of the 10 inch DD coils will greatly improve your depth. I've put thousands of hours on the X-TERRAs and many hundreds of hours on the Explorers and ETRAC. And to be honest, 99% of the coins I find could have been found no matter which detector I happened to be using. It's a matter of understanding what makes it tick, setting it up properly for any specific site and implementing the proper hunt techniques. JMHO HH Randy

I've dug large cents at 11" using the stock coil, and silver dimes at 8". When you decide to buy an accessory coil, get the 6"DD for trashy areas or one of the 10.5's if you want more depth in open areas. The big coils also work surprisingly well in trashy areas. I've got detectors that cost 4 times as much as the 305, but if it was the only one I had, I'd still be confident that I could hold my own against any machine. Worth a lot more than it costs.
