5x8 coil for Garrett at pro

Hi guys is the smaller 5x8 coil really as good as im being told? My stock coil as a crack and its been acting out alot some days it works fine and then other days it falses so much I carnt use it:-( so decided its time I buy a new coil my question is?

Do I go for a new stock or just buy the smaller 5x8 witch im hearing so many good things about any feedback would be a gr8 help

Well, I have both, and the 5x8 stays on 98% of the time. If you are hunting fields or other large, clean sites, the 8.5x11 might be best, though. My sites are usually trashy and the 5x8 finds those treasures between the trash very well. It's also excellent around brushy areas and rocky creeks. No contest for me, and it sounds like most people that try it out really like it. Many have mentioned re-hunting sites with the smaller coil and digging some VG finds.The 5x8 is really easy on the arms, too! I don't usually leave Iron audio on, but watch the Bill Ladd video for an idea of what to expect. Where are you detecting? 5x8 for woods, cellar holes , trashy areas, iron infested sites. Stock coil parks and fields open areas. Just get it no worries.
 
Gr8 video really shows how good the small coil reforms in trashy iron infested areas I will be detecting all areas parks woods farm fields pasture any place I can get so im thinking this smaller coil really will come in handy:) thanks for your comments guys
 
If you get one you won't want to use any other coil I went from finding one or two silvers a year to finding 6 in my first 4 hunts using the 5x8" coil in areas I had pounded with a bunch of other detectors using various coil sizes.
 
[size=large]i would wonder if the 8.5 was under warranty? wouldn't that be sweet. then you'd have both sizes. worth looking into.

My larger coil is still under 1 year and 3 months warranty but im not sure if the warranty covers a brake in the coil I really do hope so as would love a new coil back to use on the much larger fields
 
Ditto what William NM said, I don't enough experience with it to say if it is as deep as the stock coil or not.

Great question to be asking for coil configuration on the AT Pro. The final decision is....
 
I agree Just got mine and used it this weekend and my arm is no where near as tired after swinging it over the large stock coil and I dug coins at over 7 inches with it in rough Texas dirt and rock around the glenrose area only issue I have now is a slight line like the plastic cover inside the c
screen is comming off going to call Garrett tomorrow and see If I can drop it off tto them
 
Rich - I'm almost certain that Garrett will repair or replace that coil - give 'em a call! (but why not get the 5x8 anyhow since you've already budgeted for it in your mind...heh).
 
Thanks guys what information will I need to av ready when calling Garrett? I think you av all made my mind up that the 5x8 coil is now a must av:) so will be hopefully ordering myself one tomoz on next day delivery then hitting my local woods midweek
 
you can go on line to the Garrett Web site and print out a RMA form and send it in with the coil but you need to call them and get a RMA # from the customer service . Sending MY control head and coil in this week hopefully to fix a screen problem I live about 40 minutes from the shop but dont know if I can take it in personnal or have to ship it I am going to ask when I call tomorrow
 
Thanks for the information Barry its alot harder for me as im a at pro international users so will be sending it from the uk..I av a 2 year warrenty with the detecting shop I got the machine from so im sending it on to them first and hopefully they can help me out if not it will after go away to Garrett
 
Looks like you already got your answer, But I'll pile on anyways. Got my Pro in Jan, couldn't really use it much till snow cleared. When I bought it, I had researched it, and also heard all the stories of how once you put on the 8X5 , it wouldn't come off. Being as how my last detector was bought in 1990, and the thought process back then was the bigger the coil, the better, in the back of my mind I'm thinking " yeah, right". Well I put on the 8X5 six weeks ago, and I can't see it coming off any time soon. Found my first two gold rings, ever, and am digging pennies/dimes to 10 inches, wasn't really digging them any deeper with the stock coil. Had a headphone problem about 3 months after I bought the Pro, called up Garretts, and they immediately sent out a new set. I agree with the others, I'd bet on them replacing your coil. Thanks alot guys u really av made my mind up about this coil:) 2 phone calls today first to order a new 5x8 coil on next day delivery:) then will ring Garrett to ask about fixing or replacing my stock coil hopefully then in time I will av 2 coils
