6" Coil

dping

New member
About a month ago I bought a 705 with the 9" MF coil. I also ordered the 6" HF DD coil with it. The 6" coil was on back order and I still haven't received it. I checked with my dealer and he tells me Minlab is saying the 6" DD won't ship for another two to three weeks. My problem is I have come across an old home that has a lot of potential. The home is for sale, and even though I have access to it now, I can't guarantee I will be able to hunt it next Spring. I'm not exactly sure how old the house is, but it is pre 1950. There was once an old rail station on the back of the property. I hunted it this weekend for the first time. I couldn't move the coil without getting multiple signals. Very trashy. I was going crazy with all of the signals. I sure was wishing I had the 6" DD. I did manage to come out with some nice finds in the limited time I had to hunt. Nothing spectacular, a few 1940's pennys, a skeleton key, an old token and a button. I plan to go back this weekend when I have more time to hunt.

I've decided to cancel my order for the 6" DD and buy the 6" 7.5 Khz coil. From what I've read it's probably not as good at discrimination in trashy sites. I'm hoping it helps some. I'll probably re-order the 6" DD this Spring, I just don't have the money for both right now and even if I did I'm not sure it would get here before cold weather sets in. Is anybody else using this coil? If so will I notice a big difference using it in trashy areas compared to the 9" MF? I'm sure I'll notice some difference just based on the fact it has a smaller foot print.

Thanks
Doug

I 6 inch dd coil and find things all the time I missed and others missed. I have never used the 7.5 khz one though. You may want to put a wanted add for one on the classifieds . That is where I bought mine.

What I was told is that that is a HOT little coil and gets great depth for being small. It should have pretty good separation. I think that around old trail tracks it may have an advantage over the 6"DD based on the lower freq and the iron trash but the DD may do better due to its better ability to handle higher mineralization. I have heard that rail beds can be nasty hot but have never hunted one myself. Check the classifieds. The 5x10 has also got real good separation. Until you get the coil you are after try turning down the Sensitivity some, less reflection from trash.

The lower frequency of the concentric will not be as "hot" on lower conductive targets (such as aluminum can slaw, pull tabs and gold jewelry) as the higher frequency DD coil. And the concentric coil will provide a more accurate TID than the DD. But both are good coils and either will find anything metallic. The reason we like using a small coil is usually due to multiple adjacent targets. As such, I prefer the small DD over the concentric for coin shooting old parks and yards as it will separate targets better. Currently, they only make the 6-inch DD in the 18.75 kHz and the 6-inch concentric only comes in 7.5 kHz. So the decision becomes, do I base my coil choice on design for separation or frequency for target response? For the type of sites I hunt, I'll usually take "separation" over being "hot" on low conductive trash, and just dig more targets than I might of dug if they offered a small DD at a lower frequency. Maybe someday I can have the best of both worlds.......... a small DD at 3 kHz. JMHO HH Randy

I have both and favor the DD HF over than the MF. The MF is my second choice between the two but it depends on what you are trying to find and may also depend on your soil conditions as to which one would work better for you.

Digger is definitely right about the technical differences between the coils.

Any word yet? New/updated rumors?

I appreciate everyones opinion. Hopefully the 6" MF coil will at least help some with separation. I'm sure I'll end up ordering the 6" DD this Spring. With my luck Minelab will come out with a 6" 3 Khz DD shortly after I order it and I'll probably have to get that one also. Now I just need to figure out how I'm going to hide all of these coils from my wife

Love my DD HF 6". Pin point? What on earth for, it is under the coil, that should get you within a couple of inches.
