6 silver weekend - including a large spoon ring

Well, with two young ones at home it takes me a while to get the photos downloaded and resized, but here they are. I had a pretty good weekend. Not shown in the pictures is a 64 D Rosie I found Friday evening.

I started off on my own Saturday morning with a friend of mine. We decided to check out the local highschool field. We had a mutual friend who had found a couple of silvers there 4-5 years ago or so. For 3 hours we pounded the field and I managed to come away with a silver rosie, a war nickel, and a bent up sterling ring with a pretty cool design. Sort of like old school diamond cutting.

I got home from that hunt, and my 4 year old had done a good job with a few things, and when I asked him what he wanted as a reward, his first response was to be taken out metal detecting. Wow! :) So we hit a couple of more modern elementary school play scapes, in towns way out there that I didn't think people would be hitting. They were modern schools, but I hoped there would be plenty of clad int he ground for him. The first one we visited had shredded tires as mulch. We kept on digging up small pieces of aluminum, and my little guy was getting a little discouraged. So he decided he wanted to play on the play scape. So, I stood there watching, haphazardly waving my detector around. I wasn't too interested in digging up scrap aluminum. However I got a nice signal and kicked the rubber mulch apart and I saw something bright shining back at me. It was a really nice silver spoon ring.

I've been doing some research on it since I took the pictures and I really am at a loss as to whether it is silver, or silver plated. I can find links to WM. A. Rogers Oneida LTD that say the antique versions of this Vanessa pattern are silver. I can find "New" ones that I think are silver plated. The old ones seem to have a deeper pattern and seem thicker like mine. The silver plated ones seem really flat, with a more shallow pattern. So I'm at a loss. I know that Oneida even created these silver spoon rings themselves. So who knows. If anyone has some thoughts I'd like to hear it.

Regardless my boy was a little upset I found something cool, so he picked the detector back up within a foot of swinging he picked up a penny. Which to a 4 year old is like gold! So his faith in metal detecting restored, but that of this particular playground faded, we headed off to a few others. Most turned up a bust, but my kid had a blast switching from metal detecting to playing.

The next day (Easter) I met up with my friend again at the highschool and we tried another field. My second target was the silver wire "knot" ring. I though under the knot was a 925, but after I cleaned it I'm not too sure. It could just be a gouge. My friend said he's found these silver wire rings in the past and often they are not marked. Well that got me going the rest of the day, but unfortunatey that 2nd field was only good for clad. In fact I think between these 2 days I have never found so much clad. (nor dug as much, except at a beach) Man, I was tired.

Over all, a pretty good silver weekend for 6 or so hours of detecting. Enjoy the picks!
