65 Dime

Sunbeard

New member
I think I may have found a 1965 silver dime. How do I tell whether it is silver or not? Its also pretty corroded, if it is silver, whats the best method of cleaning it?

Thanks.

Sunbeard

Hi Sunbeard! I don't think they made silver dimes in 1965, as 1964 was the last year for silver ones, unless it is an error! The way you can tell if it is silver or not is by looking at the rim! If the rim is dark like copper than it isn't silver, but if the whole dime and rim looks like silver than it is! Silver would not corrode but just turn black in spots if found in dark, acidic soil, which can be removed by baking soda and water....just soak it and if need be if not a valuable coin, gently rub the black off....but on some the black cannot be removed very easily! I hope this helps, if not, maybe someone else will be able to do so! May God Bless! Amen! Ma Betty

Did a little research and there was a rare 65 silver dime made. The figures i saw said something like $9k for a mint one but hey that sound way to good to be true =). Anyway thanks for the advice on cleaning. I cant see the rim its caked with black, but it does sound different than a regular dime when I drop it on the desk *crosses fingers* . The "soil" around here in TN I'm not sure can be classified as "soil". Chirt! Its horrid acidic stuff. Thanks again Ma :) Will post a pic later.

was the last year of silver dimes. If it is cruddy it in not likely silver as they normally come out of the dirt clean. One more year and you got it!
