705 & 705 Gold Pack confusion?

mtshus

New member
I've been researching/ following Detecting for "A LONG TIME". It's well beyond time to get into the hobby and do more than read about it and just watch Youtube vids. I live in Gods Country (Montana) but now than I'm retired from the USAF I travel a lot thru Oklahoma / Arkansas / Missouri / Tennessee and end up in Naples Florida area for a couple of months. Of course I want a machine that does it all and has a hot coffee dispenser in the handle. I REALLY want a machine that's submersible for the edge of lakes and streams. I've been very interested in the 705 which has that capability ..... but of course the 705 Gold Pack seems more like I want for nugget hunting at and around home. I usually jump to Kellyco's site to the "compare detectors" page to do quick comparisons and I see no difference in the two machines except the water capabilities. Other than the pre-programed prospecting module is there really any difference? I'm ready to get a machine (not gonna hold out for the 705 Gold Pack Espresso model) unless you all know when that one hits the shelves?

Thanx for your input!

Shu

Glad to see you coming back into the hobby.

My first question would be what are you considering 'submersible' ? Do you mean just the coil or the entire unit ? Be aware the 705 is not a submersible unit....only certain coils are waterproof.

If you are looking for a totally waterproof unit, it narrows down the options.

There is NO difference between the two machines. The difference is ONLY that the Gold Pack comes with the 5x10" DD 18.75kHz coil, and the standard comes with a 9" Concentric 7.5kHz coil.

In all honesty, especially since gold hunting is in your future, the Gold Pack is the way to go.
Realistically, the 5x10" elliptical that comes with the Gold Pack is more expensive to buy separately than the stock 7.5kHz concentric. So the Gold Pack is a better value for the same money.

That said, the 10.5" DD coils (both 7.5kHz & 18.75kHz) as well as the 5x10" HF and the Coiltek 6" 3kHz are NOT waterproof, but are water "resistant". All other Xterra coils are waterproof.

Thanx .... Semantics sounds like it should be a disease ... but it's still a killer?! To my understanding waterproof would be dew on the grass or raining .... submersion would be purposely keeping the coil and shaft in the water for extended periods of time? I don't intend on getting the control box under water though.

The technical difference is that "water resistant" means it can take dew on the grass, hosing off, and the occasional wave splash without issue. "Waterproof" means that it can withstand submersion to 1 meter for extended periods.

FWIW, I do know of folks that have sealed their coil covers onto their coils and sealed around the cable & grommet where it enters the coil. They claim that they can then hunt in shallow water with them.

Thanx for the coil input. The dynamics of coil and control box enter action is a subject that I need to be paying more attention to I'm sure. But I also don't want to over think it right now. Just starting out in detecting I need to just hit the pre-sets and go get some hours under my belt. But do look forward to "messing around" with customizing programs to fit different environments/circumstances.

To me, part of the beauty of the 705 is that it can be be a turn-on-and-go machine as easily as it can be customized. A totally new user can turn it on, spend 20sec to allow the machine to pick the appropriate Noise Cancel Channel, 5-10sec auto Ground Balancing, and start swinging.

I'm fortunate to get to use my 705 both in Texas and in the Colorado Rockies (summer use in highly mineralized soil conditions) and I find that the 6" HF DD WATERPROOF coil and the 10.5" MF DD meets all of my needs.

I often hunt the mountain steams and if I were just starting out with the X-Terra and had to decide between the 705 standard and the 705 Gold Pack, I'd start with the Gold Pack only because of the HF DD coil for use in more difficult soil conditions. I have not found a use for the standard 9" MF CC coil since purchasing the 6" HF DD and the 10.5" MF DD coils. I believe the 10x5 HF DD would accomplish for you much of what the 6" HF DD does for me ... EXCEPT THE 6" IS WATERPROOF AND THE 10X5 IS NOT.

By all means, take advantage of the HF, MF, and LF capabilities of the 705, and don't forget the 705's prospecting mode for your variety of hunting situations, that's what makes the 705 so versatile.

Good Luck.

Thanx.......if the "Gold Pack" were water capable it would be a hands down decision. SO am I taking away from this that it would be possible to use the 6" HF DD WATERPROOF coil on the Gold Pack and I'd be able to dip it's toes in a stream or into the edge of a mountain lake as long as I keep depth to no more than 2ft?

Shu

Up to the control box (1meter=39"). And if you do venture into the water at all, be careful to NOT raise the coil above the box, as water will run up the shaft to the controls. Be careful even setting it down after being in the drink.

Of the 12 coils available for the Xterra's, only four are not waterproof. Those are the MF & HF 10.5", the 5x10" HF, and the 6" 3kHz Coiltek.

Yes, that's the way I have used the 6" HF DD coil on my X-Terra in mountain streams and have never had any problems. Mine has been submerged up to approx. halfway between the coil and control box.

I like to MD around riverside camp sites and find some good targets in the water from steam edge up to about 8" deep, but have also found that in mountain streams I can't retrieve deep targets anyway, so anything deeper would be wasted effort. Why can't I retrieve the good targets you ask?... would say it's a combination of cold water and old age!

The new Minelab X-Terra 705 Gold Pack is now available for sale through ***************.Elliptical Searchcoil. Please read below for more details on this detector. I currently have them available and ready to ship.:ranting:
