705 for saltwater beach use ?

Not as bad a you might think. I just ran a search on it and came up with these threads that might answer your questions.

My experience with the 705 on a salt water beach was that I found that I got better results not using the Beach Mode. That's been two years ago but if my memory serves me correctly I was getting more falsing in Beach Mode.

Now it could have been the current conditions of the sand's moisture content on that particular day but I remember being excited that I was going to be able to use Beach Mode and was expecting good resualts. I was actually disappointed that Coin Mode was the better of the two options but I have a feeling in many cases Beach Mode probably works really well or they wouldn't have taken the time to write that into the programing of the 705.. That was just my experience on that day. I was using the 10.5" HF coil in Ocean City, MD

I have an Xterra 70 and it works very well in both wet and dry sand. I've used mine at the beaches in Ocean City, Maryland. I set it in Beach Mode with auto tracking and sensitivity at about 23. I use the 10.5" DD 7.5 coil and it works real well, almost no falsing at all. I would venture to say that it is almost as quiet as my Quattro was but is not as deep. Also, rember that most Xterra coils are not waterproof, so you have to be careful near the water.

Actually Bill, only four out of twelve available coils aren't waterproof. The 10.5" DD HF, 10.5" DD MF, 5x10" DD HF, and the Coiltek 6" DD LF coils are only water resistant, but all the others are fine in the water.

i dont go to the beach very often detecting. Last year i tried the xterra with 7.5khz dd coil on the nearest beach to me i had it in beach mode and sensitivity at about 17-19 it was still falsing a bit on the damp/wet sand but didnt want to go any lower with the sens.
Went to the same beach this year and on the wet/damp sand it was going ballistic on beach mode, it was worse than normal mode as mapper65 had also found out. Had sensitivity on 10 and still falsing badly for some reason, the wet sand must have a lot more iron mineralisation than last year.So i guess its all down to your beach conditions as to whether the 705 is going to work or not on the damp/wet sand.

thanks hitchhiker, I think I will stick to my dual & multi-frequency machines for now, because that it all I do is saltwater beach detecting....

thanks for the info guys, & hh
