705 gets key date Merc today !!

After falling behind my friend Roy on 2012 silver coins, I decided to go back to an older home that I had found a couple of silvers with the Whites Prizm 6T. This time I was using my Minelab X-terra 705 with the 10.5 MF DD coil. I was hoping to get better coverage with the larger DD coil than I did with the Prizm and I knew the X-terra is deeper. I dug a couple of iffy targets that ended up being old rusty nails and an old pocket knife. I still had not found a coin so was thinking that I did a pretty good job with the 6T. I walked under some tree limbs and was swinging when I got a real nice 38 signal showing around 4 inches deep. I dug a nice flap and put the Propointer into the hole and the signal was still there. I dug another inch or so down and reached in with my hand and pulled out a wad of dirt. I ran the Propointer over the dirt in my hand and saw a nice little silver rim on a round piece. I put it back in the hole and took a quick picture with my phone and texted it to Roy letting him know that I just tied us back up. I started to go to the car and get a water bottle but spit on the coin instead and wiped enough of dirt away to reveal a Merc. Shot another photo and another text went out titled 1921 Mercury Dime. I stuck it in my pocket and hunted for a few more minutes when my son called me needing me to come home. I got home and washed the coin off and put it under my Celestron USB Microscope and noticed that it was a 1921 D Merc and in pretty darn good shape. Went to Cointrackers and almost fell out of my chair. The 1921 D is a very rare coin and worth a healthy chunk of change for a dime. I am so stoked and it is definitely my most valuable coin find to this date after 20 plus years of detecting. Here is a couple of photos. Any ideas on the coin rating would be welcome.

Congrats on the find!
It is in nice shape. Bummer that you snicked the rim. :( I have no idea how they'll grade it.

Sweet. That is always exciting to find a key date. Especially in decent shape.

its hard grading coins out of the ground and from photos but a rough guide would be VF+ , it wouldn't make EF, but none the less still has to be worth a couple hundred bucks .

if getting it slabbed dont send it to PCGS they wont grade it as they will say its been cleaned NGC would be a better bet if going down that path.

well done!!

WOW, congrat's on the key date Merc. That's a tough one to find, I found just a 21 a few years ago but it's beat up so bad that it's not worth anything. I'm still hoping to find a good one with a D mint mark someday.
