705 gold coil for coin shooting? How much do I give up?

Hello, I am new here and I have only been detecting for about 4 years. I have owned just about every brand of machine except bounty hunter, but I've really only owned lower end like f2, Coinmaster, compadre, delta 4000 and others. Last year I bought an AT Pro and the smaller 5x8 coil. I've liked it but I've wanted a deeper machine.

I had not considered the 705 until a buddy called saying he needed money fast. He sold me his barely used 705 gold, a like new Pro pointer and a Lesche for $360. I felt bad but he named his price and would not take more. I don't love the PP (I already have2) after I bought the TRX pointer, but my kids can use it.

Anyways, I did air tests comparing the ATPro and the 705 and they seemed similar but the AT was an inch or so deeper and the ATPro could pick up a gold chain the 705 wouldn't in coin mode, but tonight I hit a local park and in dirt I think that the 705 with the 18 kHz coil seems deep on coins in the ground than the 5x8 inch DD Garrett but I'm not really sure.

So here are my questions:
1. Do any of you use the higher frequency gold DD 705 coin for coin and relic hunting?
2. Am I giving up a lot of depth with this coil in coin mode compared to the 9 inch concentric coil (I don't have)?
3. Do the VDI reading differ on the 18 kHz coil than the lower frequency coils?
4. Is it worth it to buy and which coil should I get?

I was actually very pleased tonight with the 705! The backlit screen is awesome! I was also very happy with the trash separation as I think it is comparable to my ATPro. I love the tones and the adjustability over the ATPro. The pinpoint is spot on, and it swings so easy. It seems a bit slower than the Garrett but not bad at all.

I found a 1919s wheat down almost 5 inches and $4.58 in two hours which I feel is good for my first time out with it!

Sorry for my long winded first post! Thanks for any advise you have.

Most will suggest a lower Freq. For coin hunting and rightfully so but the higher freq. machines / coils hold there own and surpass the lower freq.at times.
I have sort of mild soil ,GB at 35-37, and my 5x10"" HF coil will hit a 8" dime in my test garden and tell you to dig it.
The higher freq machines will hit smaller targets which can be good for a coin hunter. The 5x10" coil will hit a buried dime on edge that is tilted to about the 1 o'clock position and hit it hard from all directions saying dig me. My CTX with the 6" coil will hit it but not with any kind of dig me signal. Number or tone.

The VIDs seem to run a couple of points higher than my 7.5 coil which is ok.

I think that you should spend some time with it before moving on but others will suggest differently I'm sure.

1. Do any of you use the higher frequency gold DD 705 coin for coin and relic hunting?

Yes, we have a few HF 5x10's in the family and they work great for coin shooting. Is it my first choice, no, but it's no slouch and if that's what you already have, you'll do just fine with it.

2. Am I giving up a lot of depth with this coil in coin mode compared to the 9 inch concentric coil (I don't have)?

I have both of those coils and I would say that the those two coils have similar depth but that may change based on ground balance numbers and mineralization. The pickup pattern of the DD gives you better coverage than the concentric.

3. Do the VDI reading differ on the 18 kHz coil than the lower frequency coils?

Maybe slightly depending on conditions but not by a significant amount.

4. Is it worth it to buy and which coil should I get?

I would not be without the 6" Coiltek coil for coin shooting. It's pretty much a must have. Besides it's separation from it being a 6" coil, it's depth is very good and it's really hot on silver.

I'm sure you'll get some other answers but these are mine.

Thanks mapper65.

I'm at about 13 hours on it and am still liking it a lot. I was getting a lot of iron falsing but I think I've solved that by turning the sensitivity down. I've hit an old house sight I've pounded with the ATPro and a buddy has hit with his XP Dues and I was able to pull a nickel silver spoon, a clad dime and 8 Lincoln's.
I'm going to order a couple of other coils next payday. I'm in a silver slump so hopefully the 7.5 kHz DD coil will go deeper and pound some silver.

You'll love that coil, it's a must have. Even though I have a handful of coils, my goto coils are the 6" Coiltek and the 10.5" MF DD Minelab in that order.

Have fun!
