705 poor performance on the beach.

Has anybody used the XT 705 with 7.5kh, 10.5in on the beach? My experience is very poor; Just about usable on dry sand and totally annoying on wet sand. Sensitivity turned right down (8 -9), false target signals, sticking pinpointing and auto G.B.down to 1 and GB biasing as much as +1 -1 causes more instability.Beach mode seems to be no help. One annoying scenario that keeps happening is what appears to be a solid target (Tid 40s) that pinpoints OK. On turning the sand over the target has gone!!! I experimented with my Garrett Pinpionter in the sand, locating metal objects; the Pinpointer worked as good as always with no false signals.

Over here in the UK the 705 with 7.5kHz dd coil is very popular for dry/ semi-wet sand hunting, the DD coil is water resistant only. I initially had problems because I tried to ground balance in Disc mode (beach turned on ) things improved greatly when auto ground balancing in All Metal(Beach on). I'm currently using the 9" concentric at 7.5kHz which is waterproof. Randy's guide has some help on Beach Mode.

HI Chris,
I spend a fair amount of time on the wet salt sand here in NZ,and at first had a lot of problems
with false signals etc,but after many hours of perservering I now hunt quite successfully.
I only have the stock coil and the 18.75 10" X 5".the latter is the better of the two, I can never run the sens above 17
and always run on auto gb and tracking, In the FAQ there is a few tips from both Digger and Salt water bill, keep persivering
it will be worth it remember that the 10" X 5" is not waterproof.....HH jim

Single frequency detectors just don't handle the wet salt sand well, no matter the brand.

I think some X-Terra users think they are using a multi-frequency machine, which, while technically true, isn't what they think. X-Terra's only run on a single frequency, but you can change the coil and change the frequency.

I have found that the lower the frequency, the better the VLF can handle the wet salt sand. I don't know why, but this tends to be the turth in my experience. I would go with the lowest frequency coil your unit will accept.

Otherwise, for wet salt sand, you need to either use a true mutli-frequency detector or else a PI unit. I have not found any exceptions to this rule and heaven knows I've tried.

On May the 9th. I made a post concerning the use of the X-Terra-705 at the beach. I was also using the 10.5 DD MF coil.
I did not experience any of the problems that you discussed. Fact of the matter I was very pleased with the performance of the 705 (first time used on beach). In setting up my detector for the beach hunt I first lowered my sensitivity down to 2. I then Auto NC. I then set my hunting mode to all metal and activated the beach mode (with out actually ground balancing). I then activated the target ID stability. I then increased my sensitivity to 30 and started hunting. I found that I could run my sensitivity at 28 to 30 in the dry sand. When I entered the damp sand area I lowered my sensitivity to 25 and the unit became very stable. When I entered an area with very wet sand my unit started to chatter somewhat. I lowered my sensitivity to 19 and again the unit became very stable. As I stated in my post I found a gold earring, a one dollar coin and a hand full of clad (27 coins of various denominations). Hope this helps some. HH TomB

I have been using the 705 on my local shingle covered beach and so far have had very good results , over

DD 7.5 khts , its good enough for the shingle or stones and sand but in the wet i think that the concentric is better.

I null out the first 7 notches and last 2 , sens at 27 , all others up to you.

In U.S. the coins may come up a bit different so notch what you have too.

I have used three coils on the beach:

9in standard concentric - crappy

5x10 HF: Not bad but had to really lower senstivity to around 13 to cope on the wet sand

10.5in DD MF: in my experience, the best out of the three coils. It could handle more sens to around 18 without falsing and punches pretty deep. Here is a video of a hunt a couple of months ago using the 10.5in MF on the beach (photo slideshow only)

I will post on here what i find on friday morning off the beach if anything. A bit chilly and cool here at the moment.

Snoopy,

Ever try the 3kHz 9' concentric coil on a salt water beach or in salt water?

I use it on and in water at a fresh water beach and it does well.

Good Hunting

hi

its no secret that dd coils are usually better in mineralsation and wet salt water sand
i run the 5x10" hf dd and do not have any hassles
my sens. is usually around 17-20 in the wet stuff
as tom says take the time to set up the machine well for the salt beach before starting out
i have found a few gold rings and lots of coins
best of luck to you

Only the concentric coils are water proof , all others are water resistant including the 10 x 5 inch.
If you are stable near the water edge in salt you are most likely losing depth . Multi freqs are better for that area of the beach.

I have the X Terra 70, and have used it on the beach (saltwater) quite a lot, using various coils...I've found the 10.5" 7.5kHz coil to be themost productive, but I guess it depends a bit on the amount of rubbish on the beach you are hunting, and how deep you want to go.The XT 70 will hunt ok in the wet sand, but forget about getting anywhere near the depth of a multi-frequency or a PI machine in the wet. I put the machine in beach mode, do a coil pumping ground balance, and then put it in tracking mode for a while...then I take it out of tracking mode ( except where there is a lot of black sand which tends to be in patches or pockets). I have found a lot of stuff with the XT 70 at the beach, both wet and dry sand, I can usually use a sensitivity around the 15 mark in the wet, depending on the black sand factor, and raise the sensitivity in the dry, again depending on the black sand factor. I have used the 9" 3kHz concentric coil at the beach, but came to the conclusion that the only advantage it had over the 10.5" DD was that you could let the waves wash over it, so I mainly stick with the 10.5" DD or the 10 x 5 DD, both work well. Keep trying with yours, and keep trying different things with the ground balance. You'll soon be doing well. HH

I use the XT 70 with the 18.75kh, 10.5in on a freshwater beach over fine mineralized wet and dry sand. My experience is very good. It is totally stable and I can use the sensitivity up to 27 or 28 with a rock solid threshold. It does also go very DEEP with that combination. Your problem is likely because of the saltwater.
