705 shutting off

I haven't spent much time investigating the problem yet but today my 705 would just turn off for no reason. I did put in fresh batteries. Never had this happen before.
BTW, didn't have a very fruitful day but was able to squeak out a 1913S wheatie.

i had this once with fresh batteries i put in, i had a very small amount of corrosion on the ends barely visible just rubbed the ends on my jeans and all ok Obviously yours might be a different cause.

The only time that I've had this happen, it was like hitchhiker said, only it wasn't visible. A pencil eraser to clean off the contact surfaces took care of it.

sorry to hear about the turning off problem but at least you found a wheat with a good year and mint mark.

I'll pull the batts today and check them. I try not to drop them in the batt box but I suppose I should check that also. It was very strange.
Thanks for the ideas.

With the batteries out, press the power button one time. You should hear a little thud or click through the speaker. Put the batteries back in and you should be fine. We've seen this happen with two of our 705's and that seems to cure the problem. I went through about ten battery changes in the last year and only experienced this one time. It happened about a year or so before that so it's not a major problem, just something that happens.

I used it for a couple hours yesterday and had no problems. Maybe it was a loose batt door.
Bill, this happened to me one time with my 505. I leave the environmental cover on and I think the battery door was unlatched when trying to adjust the cover after putting new batts in. When I took the cover back off, the batteries came spilling out.

I have had it happen only when my batteries were getting low.

These were fresh out of the charger. I suspect the batt door, or as it is commonly referred to, operator error.

compressed springs in the battery compartment can also cause this problem....if you think this could be the case, just gently extend the springs...a crochet needle is good of this.

OK, thanks. I usually turn mine sideways when loading or unloading. Don't want it accidently going off...oh,wait, we're talking about detectors.
I try not to just drop batts in for that exact reason. But I do like the info about a crochet needle, will need to remember thatin case iI need it.
