705 target ID display in pinpoint

RKW

New member
When hunting in the coin mode with my X-terra 705, I will often see the target ID number change from positive to negative while I use the pinpointer. While my research generally shows an overall consensus from 70/705 owners that the depth indicator is accurate whilst pinpointing, I can't seem to get a definitive answer whether or not that the target ID is accurate in pinpoint mode. Thoughts?

Thanks,
Ryan

I've kind of given up on what the display reads when I'm pinpointing. If it's supposed to make sense, I haven't figured it out. Occasionally I will see the numbers correlate with what the ID was when searching, but I also get the negative numbers. I just go with what the ID is when I'm searching and ignore the display while pinpointing. Maybe someone will shed some light on this subject but up till now, I haven't found that what is on the display while pinpointing as being very useful.

The X-705 does update the TID and depth when in Pinpoint mode. One reason that Pinpoint TID can vary is due to adjacent targets. Using a DD coil (along with a slower sweep speed) will assist in target separation, and correctly identifying those each target. Another possible reason that the TID numbers vary when you are using Pinpoint is that the target is not "exactly" pinpointed. If you are not using Pinpoint Sizing, I'd suggest you give it a try. I find it much easier to determine the target's exact location AND obtain the correct TID, using Pinpoint Sizing. JMHO HH Randy

If you are not locating real close then you may be getting a nail or something. The problem I have is I can trick the machine into turning a nail into a coin only to be disapointed after digging. That does not change the fact that sometimes there is a coin in with the nail.

I concur with mapper65. I don't pay any attention to it, but go with the reading from the search mode. I tend to think that a different (slower) sweep speed in the pinpoint mode may cause it.

Digger is right, I have noticed that when I'm using one of the DD coils the reading in pinpoint mode is often a lot closer to the target ID number, if not exactly what the target ID was.

I have found that if you pay particular attention to the depth of the target that will give a good idea what you are locking onto in pinpoint. For instance on your initial sweep you get a 42 at 2 inches ( quarter at 2 inches) Then in pin point you get a minus 8 at 6 inches. You know a quarter is lurking above a piece of iron.

Thanks for the responses. For the record, the manual does indeed state that the target ID number updates in the pinpoint mode. It also states that the best ID response will occur whilst sweeping the coil at a moderately fast swing.

I've had this 705 for about 2 months now. Learning to use it reminds me of learning to play acoustic guitar on a very superbly made guitar (I'm a guitar hobbyist). The smooth, low action on the frets instantly make ones three-chord songs sound better than ever, and any foray into more complex playing is richly rewarded. I can see myself becoming a good metal detectorist commensurate with my practice time. I cannot see myself ever becoming bored with this MD.

I made that same analogy to the guitar. I also play acoustic and relate the audio response of the X-TERRA for music. A single note that is sharp and crisp typically indicates a single target that is set to accept. A rejected target with blended tones, resemble a chord. I usually refer to that as harmonics. Glad to see someone else applying the guitar comparison. HH Randy
