705 volume fading issue anyone else know about this?

oldmancrash

New member
Good day everyone. I tried to do a search and apparently I can not narrow the field down enough to find what I am looking for. I have a 705 gold that was purchased feb/march 2012. The last couple times out it is working fine then the volume drops out. I can not hear a thing. I changed batteries (my battery indicator is still reading full batteries) and turn the 705 off and back on and this usually cures the issue. But in another thread on here I see I am not the only one who is having this issue. So I guess I should contact the service rep for my area???? How long does this take to fix usually??? I am leaving for Nome AK on June 23rd for a prospecting trip and was going to take the 705 with me but now reading that this is a issue should I not waste my time? Or should I just live with it and send it back to service when I return??

Thank you everyone for your input. Great site I have learned a LOT on here

Try pulling the batteries out and pressing the power button a few times while the batteries are out and then put them back in. If that doesn't work then follow the steps in the manual to do a factory reset.

Thank you mapper65! I have gotten in touch of Minelab and they suggested I send the machine in for a checkup. Hopefully I get it back in time for my trip. Again Thank you

If not using headphones try a pair. Also big pipes under ground will do this for me sometimes. I hope it's not the machine. Every since I got headphones I have not noticed it as much. Maybe 2 times.

I got my 705 about 8 weeks ago. 3 weeks ago my volume dropped off to nothing .I tapped the case and it came back on . It has only done this 1 more time since then. I will watch to see how you make out.

oldmancrash,
I've never had that problem but I always use headphones. Hey, anyway have fun in Nome, I went to the GPAA Cripple River camp in 2005 and had a blast! They really put on good camp. If Kevin Hoagland is up there when you are, don't miss any of his demos. I'm going up to Valdez Creek, in central Alaska, in July to do a little prospecting myself. I'll be mostly dredging, but I'm taking my 705 with me too! Enjoy yourself and watch out for the bears and the mosquitoes, not necessarily in that order!

Hi folks, Thank you so much for the comments. I am sorry I should have said the fading volume has happened with headphones and without. I have 2 friends who have bought their 705's after me and neither of them have had an issue. So I think it might be something special just for me LOL.

Food for thought. I took my 705 packaged in the original box and then packed inside another box to the UPS shipping store. I requested it to be there by thursday. The best they could say was maybe it would be there then and for a total of $75 including $800 insurance. After picking myself up off the floor I went to USPS and paid $32 including $800 shipping and guarantee delivery by wednesday. I am not sure if anyone has come across this but heck I felt like I found gold saving $43.

thecoinhunter, very cool. My buddy and I are getting a little more worked up each day. I actually started to spread things out yesterday in the spare bedroom of what is going with me. Trying to figure out how many bags I can get away with. We are only gone for a week but it will be a full week of learning I am sure. This is all new to me. We are hoping to get out and at least get a afternoon of metal detecting under our belts. But we figured we would save that for a day that the weather is so bad we cant work the dredge or high banker. Kevin Hoagland??? That name sounds familiar? Already been warned about the mosquitoes and their ability to carry a medium sized man away. Thank goodness I am a fat guy LOL. Should be a fun trip. You have any helpful hints?

Again Thank you to everyone for your comments. I will keep this thread updated as I get more info.

oldmancrash,
Kevin Hoagland use to work for Minelab, but just recently hired on at GPAA as Director of Development. He is a great guy. I'm working with him right now on a possible Outdoor Channel show about my friends at Deep Blue Marine. They are diving on a treasure shipwreck in the Dominican Republic as we speak (or write, text or what ever we are doing!). Kevin is an expert on gold hunting with the Minelab detectors, he is featured on most of the videos put out by Minelab about gold prospecting with metal detectors.
As far as helpful hints about Nome, take a variety of clothes, it could be raining, snowing, windy, hot (70 degrees) or cold. A good set of rain gear is a must, both for the obvious (rain) and to protect your clothes when you are "highbanking". Don't worry about taking too many clothes, they do have laundry facilities there for you to use. Also a good pair of hip waders and a pair of waterproof over the ankle hiking boots will be all you need for "shoes". If you forget anything, they have a store on site that has almost anything you may need. The list that the GPAA includes with your trip packet is well thought out, pay attention to what they say. Froggtogs brand of rain gear are really light weight and durable, you can get them at Sportsman's Warehouse or Cabala's. A good sleeping bag (not to heavy!) pillow and one of those high tech foam or air mattress is a must. That plywood bunk is those hooches is really hard!
The only thing that you'll say after your week is done is " I wish I would have signed up for TWO WEEKS". There is always next year. Another warning, Alaska in habit forming, you'll have to go back after you have been there once!!!!!!!!!!!!
Have fun and tell Tom and Perry and Kevin (if he's there) hi from Bill in Utah.

I'm able to ship UPS from my office at a discount so I get to see what it costs to ship via UPS. Unless you have no other choice, the UPS Store is never a cost effective way to ship something. I didn't have a box large enough to ship an Apple iMac in. I went to the local UPS store (which has since gone out of business) because I knew they would have a box. I bought a box and figured that I might as well have them ship it since it was going UPS anyway and I was at a UPS store. When they told me the price I said "I'll pay you for the box but I can't pay you that kind of money to ship it." I went back to my office, put it on the scale and it was around 1/3-1/2 the cost for me to ship it on our UPS account. Lesson learned!

Lately the good ole USPS has been my choice for shipping. It cost me less to send through them compared to our discounted UPS account.

OK time for a little update. I called yesterday to get the status of my 705. Of course I did not have my RMA number. Why would "I" be prepared? So the guys were very very nice on the phone. The first person I talked to looked all of my info up and nothing had been updated in the computer. He said that is not unusual as they have 2 different computer programs and until they update theirs it will not show my machine even coming in. He promised that they would call back in a while and give me an update. I figured maybe hopefully I would hear back from them. Well in a couple hours I got a phone call from Brian and he said the machine was checked in last Wednesday and the issue was found and repaired and return shipped on Thursday. Now dang it that is what I call service. In one day and out the next. Plus they really did call me back. Brian suggested that I really give it a work out seeing as to how I am taking it to Alaska next week with me. He wants to make sure it is fixed before my trip. THANK YOU MineLab!!!! I wish 90% of our stores here in Missoula would take a lesson in customer service from these guys. I am really sold even more on minelab detectors now more then ever. I will update again when I get it and am able to test it out.

Sounds like BADBAJA will be sending in his 705 before the warranty runs dry here in a few months. Arrrrrrr anyone got a ctx they will let me borrow for a month? Lol

oldmancrash,
I just got back from my trip to Alaska and was wondering how your Nome adventure went. I did better at fishing than prospecting, but sometimes you prospect, sometimes you find gold, sometimes your fish and sometimes you catch!!!!!!!!!!!! We took about 300 pounds of halibut, cod, ling cod and rock fish to the processors after our fishing trip out of Whittier last week. I wish we did better at the gold, but we had fun up on Valdez Creek anyway, We saw lots of wildlife and some beautiful country, I can't wait to go back. I'm already planning a trip up there next year. We met a bunch of guys like the "Gold Rush Alaska" group up on Valdez Creek area and they were just setting up their operation to get it ready to really hit it hard next year. They had a bunch of their equipment held up in Canada by customs and didn't get started as early as they expected this year. Looking forward to hearing how you did at Cripple River.

Hello thecoinhunter, 300 pounds of fish? WOW that is a lot of fish. It will be a nice treat during the year. Sorry about the gold. Hopefully next year when you go back you will have as much luck with the gold as you had with the fish. I had a heck of a good time. On the way into camp we were lucky enough to see some whales that were pretty close to the shore. I couldn

not for 2 people. Hopefully we come up with more yet. We still have about 40 pounds of cons to go through. Need about 4oz to pay for both trips.

oldmancrash,
Well, it sounds like you guys had a lot of fun and a productive time in Nome. The GPAA really puts on a great camp at Cripple River. When I went in 2005 a young couple and their sons went all the way to the Penny River and did the same thing you did with the buckets on the ATV's. They got about two ounces, so you did really well!!!!!!!!! One thing about going to Nome is the first time you go there you learn a lot and the next trip(s) you'll learn and find more. One week is just not enough is it? Two weeks is better, but three or four is best! Did you get to meet Kevin Hoagland? How about Tom and Perry Massie? Well. I had better go, I have to go to work in the morning, I've got to drive up to Pocatello, Idaho to deliver some liquid argon. Thanks for the update, I'm sure everybody enjoys the stories of gold as much as I do.

thecoinhunter,

No, 1 week is nowhere long enough. I would be hard pressed to say 2 weeks is even enough. There is a LOT to do there and plenty of daylight to do it in. Just the need for rest gets in the way. We hope that more trips are in our future and should be a lot easier to know what to expect. Kevin Hoagland was not there, dang it. I had heard he might have shown up later in the week but got tied up elsewhere. I would have enjoyed to have a couple hour class with him on MDing. Don't get me wrong, I have learned tons from findmall (most all I know about metal detecting so far is from here and my buddy loosecanon on here) but to have a hands on and be able to ask questions as they come to me would be great. Maybe he will be at the Butte show??? one never knows. I got to meet Brandon (I believe that is his name, one of Toms sons) and he was a very well presented person. I am embarrassed to say but he remembered my name every time we seen each other and I would space his. I asked him some questions about the GPAA forum and the mining guide and gave him an oldmans .02 and he seemed very open to my thoughts and suggestions. So how many time have you been able to go to cripple river? have you done any other adventures like it? Myself and Loosecannon and our other friend are looking at going to AZ or NV the week between Christmas and New Years for a prospecting trip. Should be fun if we can nail down a place to venture to.

Liquid argon? sounds like you work for about the same type of company as my bother in-law, Norco.

Have a good one

oldmancrash,
I work for Praxair based at Garfield Utah (west of SLC, Utah), I'm one of their tanker drivers. I've been hauling cryogenic liquids for almost 29 years and have been a truck driver for 42 years. I've been thinking of making a career out of it! Anyway, back to this forum, I've only been to Cripple River one time, but have been to Alaska three times now. On my second trip I went to Cache Creek, west of Talkeetna and from there we went to Chicken over toward the east side of the state. We did really well at Chicken, especially on our last day there, We ran into the "magic" blue/grey sandy clay layer in the perma frost. Too bad we had to leave the next day. The "oldtimers" at Chicken told us about this layer. They said when you find this layer you'll know it, and boy did we. You could see the gold running throughout this layer in the creek bank. Next year I'm thinking of going to Homer to spend some time prospecting and maybe do some fishing too! The year (2005) when I went to Cripple River I met a guy named Allen. He and his wife live in Wasilla, Alaska. We've become good Friends and he is my guide when I go up there. He is also a gun dealer which comes in handy for bear protection when we go out on our adventures. I've got a pretty cool picture of me metal detecting with my Xterra at Roosevelt Lake this year wearing my new Smith&Wesson 41 magnum with a chest mount holster that I bought though Allen. Allen's wife took the picture, so I'll have to wait until she emails the photos to me, then I'll post it here on the forum. When is the GPAA Gold Show at Butte? I might just have to make a trip there that weekend, it would be a pleasure to meet you and your friends. I've done a little prospecting in Montana at Bannack, well not right in Bannack, but in the dredge tailing's nearby. We had permission from the land owner at that time. I used to stop at the Prospectors Shop, west of Helena, and talk with Bud Guthery all the time when I travelled that area, what a great man. He always had some fascinating stories to tell and some beautiful gold specimens that he had found metal detecting in that area of the state.
I really enjoy hearing your stories about prospecting and metal detecting in Montana because I can picture these areas in my mind because I've been to most of these areas myself.
Thanks

Hello thecoinhunter

Funny you bring up Chicken. We almost went there instead of Cripple river. My buddy had said he heard good things about Chicken but we opted for Cripple instead. Now if I were to tell him about what you are saying I am sure he would be all over it. Seemed like a pretty nice area if I remember right. Boy I wish I had a guide for AK. I think if I were to go there to many more times one of them I might not come back LOL. A 41mag, nice gun. Shoots easy and does not beat you up like the 44 mag. I have a model 629 nickel 44 mag that I took to AK with me. YUP kicks a little. My buddy took bear spray with him to AK and I took my 44. I told him to spray the bear real good so he has a nice flavor of pepper before chomping on his arm that is holding out the can of spray. I'll just make sure the bear stops with eating him and doesn't come towards me. Truck driver, that is a tough trade these days. I am a network coordinator for the school district. Right now is kind of our slow time. But here in a couple weeks when the teachers start coming back it is going to pick up and get crazy for about 4 or 5 weeks. The Butte show is Sept 15 and 16th. I am really looking forward to it. My wife and I went to the Vegas show. I was expecting the show to be all showie and lights and such. You know, it's Vegas so you just expect BIG. It wasn't. We spent 4 days there and got to have a lot of fun watching the world go by and visit cabelas and the pawn stars pawn shop and a few other small things. But I was really disappointed in the show. Several of the dealers were saying how much bigger it was than last years. I am not sure how many vendors maybe 50-60 prospecting dealers. Still for my first gold show it was a kick in the pants. We even got our $3.50 worth the gold we paid $5.00 for LOL. To be honest I was more impressed with the Spokane show. It had more homemade type stuff. I enjoy walking around and seeing what everyone is making. Spokane had about the same number of vendors but I think better deals. YUP we got our $3.50 gold both days in Spokane for $5.00 LOL. Lots of fun. From what I hear the Butte show is even better than Spokane. Seeing as to how it is about 70 miles from us we are going. Both days I think. I need to win that 2 week all expenses paid trip to Cripple River HAHA. Come on over it would be fun to meet you also.

I've been to the shop west of Helena at the base of the pass. The guy runs it out of his house doesn't he? Been awhile ago. I have not been in that area prospecting but I hear it is good.

Anyhow. I joined a local gold prospecting group in Lincoln MT last month. This month they had their monthly outing at a big flea market in Lincoln MT. They wanted to set up a booth and have volunteers run it during the flea market. So on thursday night my wife and I load up in the old motor home and headed east. When we got there we were lucky enough to find 1 open camp space at the same place the market is going on. So in we went. Leveled up and put out the awning. Went to hook up the power as the dogs were leaving puddles of drool from panting on the hardwood floors in the motor home. Hum, no power. The guy in space 2 took space 1's power and water. Not bad enough but the whole line of campers did it. So at the far end was water and electric but no space. Just my luck. What the heck !!!! so we rounded up a Y connector to at least have water and a guy down the lane said that another camp ground down the road most likely had some sites with power and water. So I unloaded one of the ATVs and went scouting. Sure enough they had an open spot thursday night but were booked for the weekend. But maybe, just maybe 1 camper might cancel the weekend reservations friday. So I took the spot. Went back to the original spot and within a few minutes we were driving the tin tent to it's new home for the weekend. I was in such a hurry I had the wife drive my ATV so I didn't have to load it again. The first thing we did was plug in and turn on the AC. Oh boy that felt good. So after a restful and cool night my buddy (loosecannon on here) shows up friday for his first gold prospecting experience while metal detecting at the club claim. We went up and he went around detecting spots and everywhere he got a different tone that might have been gold he dug a little hole and collected the dirt. After a couple of hours we took all of our dirt and went to the flea market to see everyone from the club. Well my buddy started panning his dirt and a fellow club member (who is a GREAT panner) was showing him how to work the pan. Wouldn't you know it a few flakes started to show up. Then a few more. His eyes lite up like a Christmas tree. He was saying how cool this was to find gold out in the wild. The more he worked the pan the more gold was showing up. I think by the end of the day he had 30 or 40 flakes. Some of them were nice size flakes to boot. So long story short now every time I talk to my buddy it is are we going back to the claim? When we going back? So I guess you know what we will be doing this weekend? LOL Lots of fun. This guy has gotten me into several hobbies and it is fun watching him run with one of mine.

anyhow I guess I had better go. Take care.
