oldmancrash,
I work for Praxair based at Garfield Utah (west of SLC, Utah), I'm one of their tanker drivers. I've been hauling cryogenic liquids for almost 29 years and have been a truck driver for 42 years. I've been thinking of making a career out of it! Anyway, back to this forum, I've only been to Cripple River one time, but have been to Alaska three times now. On my second trip I went to Cache Creek, west of Talkeetna and from there we went to Chicken over toward the east side of the state. We did really well at Chicken, especially on our last day there, We ran into the "magic" blue/grey sandy clay layer in the perma frost. Too bad we had to leave the next day. The "oldtimers" at Chicken told us about this layer. They said when you find this layer you'll know it, and boy did we. You could see the gold running throughout this layer in the creek bank. Next year I'm thinking of going to Homer to spend some time prospecting and maybe do some fishing too! The year (2005) when I went to Cripple River I met a guy named Allen. He and his wife live in Wasilla, Alaska. We've become good Friends and he is my guide when I go up there. He is also a gun dealer which comes in handy for bear protection when we go out on our adventures. I've got a pretty cool picture of me metal detecting with my Xterra at Roosevelt Lake this year wearing my new Smith&Wesson 41 magnum with a chest mount holster that I bought though Allen. Allen's wife took the picture, so I'll have to wait until she emails the photos to me, then I'll post it here on the forum. When is the GPAA Gold Show at Butte? I might just have to make a trip there that weekend, it would be a pleasure to meet you and your friends. I've done a little prospecting in Montana at Bannack, well not right in Bannack, but in the dredge tailing's nearby. We had permission from the land owner at that time. I used to stop at the Prospectors Shop, west of Helena, and talk with Bud Guthery all the time when I travelled that area, what a great man. He always had some fascinating stories to tell and some beautiful gold specimens that he had found metal detecting in that area of the state.
I really enjoy hearing your stories about prospecting and metal detecting in Montana because I can picture these areas in my mind because I've been to most of these areas myself.
Thanks
