A Couple Pieces Of Silver From Yesterday...

My buddy Karl and I hit a farm field for a few hours yesterday morning. I was using my Explorer SE with the 12.5" coil and Karl was using his Quattro (that used to be mine) with the stock 10.5" coil.

I got two wheaties and Karl got a wheatie and a flat button. In the silver department, I got a 1913 Barber dime and Karl dug a 1929 Standing Liberty Quarter...his first silver coin...go Karl!

Nice silver, Mike. How do you like the 12.5 coil? I'm considering something bigger than the stock coil for fields. Ron

Ron, for the fields, woods, and other fairly clean spots you can't beat this coil. It's well balanced, same weight as the stock FBS 1050 coil...though a little heavier than the Slimline from the SE...and ID's and pinpoints very nicely. And can be run at equal or better sens than the smaller coils. I highly recommend it.

Well, it was like 22 for an overnight low that day and when we started it was about 28 or so. By the time we got done I think it was 43. The ground WAS frozen initially but only like the first inch. You had to break through the "crust" but it wasn't too bad after that. We had some days at or near 70 in January, so not your typical winter. It's cold again now but unlike pretty much EVERYTHING even slightly north of us, not cold enough to snow.

Yes, I see what you mean. We never looked at it with a loupe. The distortion and wear of the silver made it look like 1929 at first glance and sort of in the picture too. Here's another pic of it, up close...I can see where that could very well be a "1".

Compare it to the 1930 pictured below (that I dug in a little park in Brunswick Georgia a few years back)...doesn't Karl's also seem to have the recess...with just maybe a lot more handling? What do you think...still 1919? Or 1929?
