A few site finds for the weekend!

Hello all. Haven't posted here for a while, I've been so busy with studies and all, but I did manage to get out over the past weekend for a few hours. Decided to hit some pine plantations. I drove through them and discovered the chimney ruins of an old farm house, so got my detector out and gave the ground a go. The ground was very uneven, and though the trees had been cut down ages ago, there were still rows and rows of dirt mounds where the trees once stood. Found a few coins and interesting relics, one of the coins was just lying ontop of this dirt mound, in full view! I plucked it from the ground, wishing more relics were this easier to find!

Really neat stuff..Glad you were able to make it out..Love the old thimble..Was it silver? Larry

I don't know but it sure looks neat. I like all the designs on it. Darn it, Golden. How do you always keep finding all those "older" coins. You must be going to the right places. I know my "beach hunting", "ain't gonna do it most of the time". I guess I need to go to older "haunts" and or/do some serious research on where the older areas are. Good stuff, you found there. I'm wondering if you still dig "everything" or discriminate a little bit? Marc.

Hi Marc. I don't use any discrimination whether detecting on the beach or gold fields. But I don't dig everything. I've learned to read the signals and tones of an object and work out to some degree which targets I'll dig, and which ones I won't. But if I'm ever unsure of a signal, and depending on what I've already dug as to what it's likely to be, I'll dig it up regardless. One example, when relic hunting, I like to pick up most things. On one site I frequent, I pick up a lot of the old Henry Martin bullets and cases. I know the signals and tones of these targets, and mostly that's what I find on this particualar site. So whenever I get the signal for it, I know it's a bullet or casing before I dig it. And I just dig it. Other signals that differ, and there aren't too many on this site, may have me guessing, so I'll dig them too. But certain signals that are low, long draw out signals I know also to be bits of lead or rubbish metal, and don't bother digging those. Because I've dug enough of them to know that;s what they are, so don't dig. I'm not after those targets. You just learn as you go. Lots of practice, and I've put in a fair amount of solid detecting hours for years with the Quattro. Still, sometimes a target that has me baffled, I'll dig it, you learn from digging up you targets.

...but it looks pretty neat. Maybe it's some sort of an inlay to something? I can tell you though that both of your keys went to Fords. The one on the left is from a Model A or a late-model "T" and the one on the right is a later one maybe from the mid/late 30s to late 40s.

nice finds all-around

That's an interesting Doo-Dad ! Doesn't appear to be "dug." Scrimshaw? What's it made of - shell? Does it open up? How big is it? Is the small pattern made with beads on thread? What are the round balls made of? Got some more pic angles?

Golden, your a hard working woman, as well as an almost "non-stop" detectorist. Man, your scaring me to death with your energy and enthusiasm. I only wish I could gain part of the commitment, enthusiasm and determination that you have. My hat is off to you lady, and you know I'm not kidding. Marc Trainor. :|
