Back in the fall of 1989, I received notice from the government that my services as a building custodian at the Federal Building in Saginaw, MI was terminated due to a Reduction In Force. This was the same day I received the signed divorce decree of the marriage to my first wife whom was my high school swwetheart, my wife of 18 and a half years and mother to my 2 sons. I had already moved out to an apartment months prior leaving the 2 sons behind. Christmas was approaching and though I had secured a part-time job that barely paid bills I knew I would have nothing for my sons for Christmas. That did not change.
The fond memory of that Christmas was that of an elderly neighbor (or previous neighbor) who remained a friend to both my ex-wife and to me. Her name was Lois Davidson and was in her 80s, long departed from this world. Lois had lost her husband a long long time prior to this and lived alone. This one night I called her and asked if she felt up to going for a ride. She agreed to go out for a ride with me. It was after dark, a white winter snow was gently dropping flakes from the sky as I drove us around. For both of us, to be alone, would have been a hard hard thing. Together we looked at the Christmas lights around Saginaw, MI - City Hall, the Water Works, other public places and we drove to Frankenmuth. MI which is the home of Bronner's that sells nothing but Christmas items all year round. They always put up beautiful displays on their property and Frankenmuth itself is a German decent town that has a proud heritage.
Lois and I listened and sang along with the Christmas songs that came over the car's radio. Lois commented on how lovely my singing was to her and dispite her age she sung very well too. It was a wonderful night. Little did either of us know it would be the only such time. She is long gone but not forgotten. She was such a comfort to me that night and I am sure I was to her as well. She was a Sister in Christ and has gone on before us.
I only remembered this tonight as I was driving back home from an errand by myself as I flipped stations on the radio I heard some Christmas music and started singing aloud. Lois - you are missed.
