A fun week with the LTD.

Earlier in the week I drove up to Nashville to give my son a hand cutting down a tree that had been damaged in a rain/wind storm a while back. Later in the day, with the LTD in tow, we drove out into the country side to look at a old Jeep he was interested in possibly buying. He restores them and then re-sells them. The guy that had the jeep lived in a 50's era farm house and I inquired about detecting his yard while they were discussing the jeep. He said "sure," but you might be better off going to the bottom of that hill and detecting around there. "That is where the original home site was from the early 1900's to 1957 when it was moved this spot and remodeled." I didn't have a lot of time to hunt, so I started hunting along what appeared to may have been the driveway. In a little over a hour and a half, I recovered several wheats, 3 IH's, 3 Buffalo's and a 1900 V nickel, 2 Mercs., 2 Standing Lib. quarters, (1 a no date and the other a 1926) a 1936 British Six Pence (silver) and a 1942 Fuji Florin (silver) and a silver wide band ring. The fellow thought the ring may have been his grandmothers and I am now in the process of sending it back to him. I kept it to enter in our clubs jewelry finds of the month cat. My son bought the jeep and I have open invitation to return and hunt.:)

Yesterday, I hit a spot that I've been hunting now for several years and recovered a sterling silver ladies ring with a amethyst stone.

This morning I hunted with a fellow club member at a old city park. The site has been pounded over the years and combined with a hundred plus years of trash, old targets are hard to come by. Near the end of the hunt, I got a deep iffy mid, high tone signal that hoovered in the upper 70's. From an 8" depth I recovered a ladies 1940 10K class ring. About a third of the band was broken off, (yea, I looked hard for the piece) but Balfour 10K marks were visible on the inside as well as the date 19 on one side of the crest and 40 on the other.

It's been a while since I've had a week such as this. And, I can't wait to get back up to Nashville. HH jim tn

Well done Jim. Great finds.

I hunted a now abandoned and heavily grown up school yard today that was started back in the late 40s. Had to use the 5" DD because of all the weeds and tall brush. Unfortunately no silver. Oldest coin I found was a 1956 nickel that was down around 7". It actually rang in with a high tone when I first located it. Also found 5 clad quarters, 3 clad dimes, 10 copper memorials, and 4 small buttons. One of the buttons was in the bottom of a hole that measured up to the top of my Sunray probe before I finally got to it.

I hadn't been hunting with the 5" for a while, using the 11" and 6 1/2," and started realizing on my trashy sites that my recoveries had fallen off. That being, recoveries of all kinds. As soon as I put the 5" back on the first of last week, I started finding more targets again from among the trash. Although the farm site didn't seem to be as trashy as as one would think, I did have the 5" coil on. I know it was a contributing factor for the silver and gold rings. It is a killer coil in the trash. HH jim tn

Congratulations on your great week. Just getting permission to hunt an old place is a great day and finding the targets that you did is a big plus. Glad to hear that you are still finding good targets at the old park, my wife and I haven't been down there in awhile but we will get back there after the crappie quit biting.

hi jim!
what do you attribute your better performance with the 5"coil to?
do you feel it is better in the junk than the 6" concentric?..

thanks!

j.t., the 5" does have better target separation then the 6 1/2, although the 6 1/2 is pretty good. Brian used the analogy that when hunting with the 5" coil was like trying to paint a 747 with a q tip. I take this to mean it's a slow go, which it is, and I take it one step further and endeavor to cover the 747 (ground) very carefully with each swing so as not to miss a spot. With any kind of a good tone I work that spot, pinpoint, from different directions, pinpoint, until I've got the target nailed, pinpoint, and then make the decision to dig. It is really amazing how many good targets there still are in the trashy, hunted out sites. HH jim tn

thanks jim!..it is what i suspected being a dd!...i have the 6"coil and have done just allright with it,so was wondering if
the 5 separated a little better, and apparently it does!.. once again, because of the dd footprint!.with EITHER coil,
you HAVE to slow down when hunting in the junk, regardless of the make of detector,so you can effectively isolate your
good hits!..i like the 6' coil it works well, however, rather than "bite" for the l.t.d,i think i'll grab the 5" coil instead!
i believe it to be an "effective" compromise in my soil!..
