A hunt to break in the 6x8 SEF, and it finds a silver...

Took the 6x8 out for a bit longer hunt today; only had it out for about an hour and a half prior to this. I like this coil. Running it thoroughly through my test garden shows it to be roughly 2" less, depth-wise, compared to the Pro coil. However, as expected, it separates well, and pinpoints very nicely. I like it -- very nice size, and it seems to perform pretty well.

Went back to the spot where I found 2 Mercs and a Barber dime last month -- there's not a whole lot left in the portion of the area I am hunting, but there are spots with alot of iron/nails, so I wanted to see if it could sneak any more goodies out. I did manage 2 more wheats, and a '44-D Merc. I KNOW I was over the spot where the Merc was, with my Pro coil. It was in close proximity to some iron/nulling, and within 6 or so feet of where I pulled the Barber, and one of the other Mercs. I went over the area surrounding those two coins pretty good, on a couple of occasions, with the Pro coil. I was impressed with that -- the Pro coil apparently did not see this coin, or at least not cleanly enough to get me to dig it.

One thing about the Merc -- it looks to me like the obverse and reverse of the coin may not be perfectly "lined up" so to speak. When you look at the obverse, and set the coin so that the year is facing perfectly horizontal, flipping the coin directly over shows the fasces on the reverse appearing to sit not quite vertical -- maybe 5-10 degrees off or so. Would this make any sense, and would this make the coin have any particular collector's value?

Thanks,

Steve

That's called 'die rotation' and does happen with some frequency. When the rotation is significant, it can start to have collector value as a mint error. Slight rotations don't seem to though.

Enjoy the new coil - it definitely can sniff a few more goodies out.

:cheers:Nice target separation with the 6X8...
