A lot of people move too fast to get a lot of depth too..

If you are using an Explorer, you have to slow down to get the depth. If you are swinging it fast, you will lose depth. It is not a machine for a competition hunt. I go slow in hammered sites and listen for the slight sounds that signify something is in the ground. I then scrape the leaves (in the woods) or really put the coil to the ground and investigate the sound. That is how you can find the deep old coins that have been missed. It can take an hour to do a small area,(cause you are going slow!) and you will dig some junk, but it is usually old junk that could have been a coin.. thats my take. You gotta slow down!

Indeed Explorers hate air and scrubbing the ground and moving slowly works the best for most..We have one young fellow at the club that moves quite fast and does as well as anyone. I would feel his excellent hearing helps and if you want to go a little faster use FAST on with or without DEEP depending on your conditions as it allows you to move a bit faster..

In my experience I totally agree with your opinion, however, in club competition hunts a guy with the initials of M.M. wiped up in a club hunts swinging the Minelab like a hand cycle Of course he was / is the exception rather than the rule...So, it seems to me the machine has the capability to excell as far as the operator

I thought with fast on you were suppose to slow down? I move slowly and almost always have fast on due to trash..?

Indeed moving slowly in trash with fast on you will pull the goodies from the trash..
This fellow I was relating to has excellent hearing, hunts deep silver and listens for the high tone tone spike while running with deep and fast on. Personally I move like a turtle when using an Explorer, but this young fellow is able to move faster due to good hearing as fast allows him to catch targets more quickly with fast on and enables him to swing a bit faster which is not the norm for successful Explorer users...

You know, I am sure, anytime I give my thoughts to any new users I beg them to crawl with the explorer. And the whole scrub the ground thing. But I must say I have hunted with Big Mike and Golddigger many times and they fly. At least till they start finding coins, then they slow down some. But they still swing faster than most. But they both have the 10" ear. (Detectorist version of the 1000 yard stare )
I don't really think the explorer loses depth the faster you go,(to a point) I just think an untrained ear misses the deeper hits. I know I do. That is another reason I like a high gain I think. It kinda grabs my attention to some deeper objects in heavy trash I might otherwise ignore when I am hearing bunches of crap and am not paying as much attention as I should.
