Well, it's not really new, it's a 2002 VW diesel. We went to Fredericksburg today and bought it off a lot; we had been looking on Ebay for about a month for a diesel bug. Believe me, they hold a high retail because they get 45-50 mpg. Found a few good deals but they were always 1000 miles away, either Florida or Texas. We couldn't even find anything local until we tried Craigs list and ran across this one at what I thought was a fair price. Now from what we've been reading, these VW's will go up to 400,000 miles if taken care of. The reason we got it is;
#1: According to the experts, gasoline is supposed to hit $5.00 a gallon by Christmas time because of the oil spill and shutting down of the oil rigs. I've heard several people predict this whom I respect.
#2: We have 2 larger vehicles that don't get the greatest gas mileage; with a family of 6 you need a pretty roomy vehicle if you want to be comfortable. The VW, however, is just for Sharon to run the girls to their activities such as gymnastics a couple times a week (an hour each way), volleyball and run-a-rounds. We decided to keep the conversion van because we can get all the family in there comfortably, and of course I'm not selling my truck anytime soon. If push comes to shove and gas and gas lines go crazy, I can actually use the fuel oil out of my furnace storage tank to run the diesel (it's the same thing, I checked).
The car is irridescent blue/purple color; depends on how the sun's hitting it and where you're standing, kind of cool really. It has 174,000 miles on it, it's an automatic, it drove and handled great, has quite a bit more power than the last old style Beetle I drove, had no trouble with hills, and did I mention it gets 48 mpg? Most of the cars we looked at on Ebay went form $8,000 - $14,000, even with high miles. We got this one for $4995, and tomorrow is my wife's birthday. Convenient, huh?
Thanks for looking,
Vernon
