I know since I originally posted this there has been many a new face here using an Explorer II (and this probably applies to other detectors as well).

It is to give you something to think about.

Hope you find this helpful..

interesting screens. maybe helps some to make the decision on how much discrimination to use. those of us using iron mask that is almost "wide open" wont have this situation BUT we still need to be cognizant of which goodies fall where on the screen! thanks!

Like you Pat, I hunt wide open in Iron Mask and dig most everything on the right side of the screen, but I have found CW buttons that fell on the lower left side of the screen. I depend on the tones as much, or more, than the screen itself. Bottom line is that the best discriminator is your shovel. HH and Happy New Year!

When i changed from the Explorer to the etrac i did a test somewhat similar, first i discriminated out pulltabs, foil and caps, in the learn screen i passed some 50 gold rings and bits of earing etc, when i finished not 1 bit of the disc shadow was left, i used the smallest square for the purpose, lesson learnt.
I beach hunt 99% of the time and on ocasions the learn feature has its use like if i'm fast coinshooting with little time in the dry and there are loads of the same type pulltab about, but be carefull and return it when finished
